Worked with a chap who used to recite this when he had had a few drinks (which was quite often). I thought I remembered a version where the boy turns up at home later. Maybe it was something else

Do you remember when policemen used to patrol the streets catching criminals and preventing crime rather than arresting people for thought crime? We used to have a village bobbie here who lived locally and patrolled on foot and bicycle. He knew just about everybody and I was able to provide information to him which led directly to two arrests. I think I saw a police car here a few months ago but I'm not sure.

I remember giving cheek to a teacher in a chemistry class I would have been about 11-12 and I was chewing gum a big no no at school, he called me to the front of the class so I stuck the gum behind my ear an swaggered to the front the next instant I received a mighty smack around the ear and told to wait outside, I stood with my head ringing, I felt my ear and was horrified to feel a soft lump at the back (the gum) and was convinced that my brains were coming out, I was very wary of that teacher in the future. to day he would have been hauled before the courts, but I learned a lesson. we need more instant punishment to day!

Yep even slide rules (slip sticks for our US mates) were frowned upon in those days, but this little book was indispensable for logarithms, Sines. cosines and tangents and I will bet Mike knows the book well. As you can see from its condition I used it quite a lot.
Ah the days of Naperian logs :)
I do remember the first time we were allowed to take a slide rule into exams and the examiner checked each one to make sure we had not put any notes or formula on them. I mean "as if"

My old wooden ruler was a source of inspiration to me. Its surprising how much you can get on one

Wooden ruler?? I knew a man with a wooden foot but he didn't use it as a rule.

There is an old jazz standard "Woody n you" composed by Dizzy Gillespie as a tribute to Woody Herman
