    A masterpiece finally recorded

At long last, Chandos has recorded Ivanhoe by Sir Arthur Sullivan.

It's a grand opera, with glorious music and I just HAD to download it from iTunes last night because all the Sydney CD stores had sold out (thank god for iTunes).

This opera has a special place for me as I had suggest the late Richard Hickox think about doing it with Opera Australia. He loved the work, but thought it "too much of a risk with Australian audiences" (who are very prone to Aida, Tosca, Butterfly and other such oft repeated drivel).

Hickox did say to me in a letter that my question had ignited his curiosity and that he was planing doing it "in the UK". Of course when he tragically died I was devistated as I loved his work with our national opera company AND that Ivanhoe was probably now not going to happen.

Low and beHOLD!! the wonderful David Lloyd-Jones and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (a very distinguished band) finished this project off. Yay, I love EVERY bar of it.

I recommend ALL Britons who love good opera rejoice in this rarity!!
I'm not an atheist and I don't think I can call myself a pantheist. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many different languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn't know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God.
