Midi editing software

I've been searching the web for a programme which will allow the editing and inserting of control and programme change messages. Plenty of them about if you only want to edit notes, volume and speed, but unless you want to spend an arm and a leg or two no control capability. One or two claim top offer control editing, but turn outr to be "crippleware" which either prevents you saving your work or adds beeps every 30 seconds and pops up messages saying "Buy me now, only £xxx for the full version"

I'm on a pension, food and fuel take a priority, the other alternative would be to buy a midi controller or keypad, money again, the software versions of those don't seem to run to programme change either.

On the "piano roll" display which a lot of these editors use, why can they not add the option to insert a control message, they manage to do that with notes, volume and speed changes, why not control and programme changes?

Actually music software was what brought me here. I was also searching and became a bit disappointed that this forum did not have a better section for it. We could have pinned threads in it about the best freeware for:

Music notation
Composing music
Music recording

And the likes. A small resource center so to speak...

Yep it runs in Linux and Widows, but when you download it, its in a load of C++ or similar files that need compiling,

Since found the windows version, somewhat hidden among the Linux stuff. Downloaded and installed, horrible screen, mostly dark grey on black, little or no help, on line help is in Wiki and nowhere near complete, controllers opens a blank page.

I managed to open a midi file, then had to magnify it 800% to see anything clearly, even then it was only the time (horizontal) scale that expanded, not the vertical.

All the terminology is DJ and rock oriented, I rate it useless for VPO work. (GrandeOrgue etc).

Back to the Google search, third day thereof!

Well the Midi Ox forum, I posted a query, after 10 days with no response I decided not to wait any longer and cancelled my membership.

Tried Harmony Central, had one response in about 3 weeks which was a link to a programme that crashed claiming a floating point error every time I tried to open it, so that got uninstalled.

As mentioned in a post to the Digital organ forum, I have found a good Midi editor, Midiocre

I did try it once before, but didn't find what I was after, eventually found it on revisiting it, the edit function I was after was hidden, it needed a right click to open a dialogue box with numerous edit functions.
