Ah thank you, Keely Smith I didn't know and I never thought of Elkie Brooks. I must admit the sound on youtube is not always good, it just gives you a brief listen.

Some of the Classical works on youtube can be OK, jazz often reasonable, pop can be really dire though.
I tend to listen to stuff on there to get a general idea then go looking for a decent version, you can at least tell the difference between something tuneful and an atonal load of manure.
Cheers MIKE.
How many roads must a man walk down ... ... before he admits he's lost?

I know what toff means but where did the word come from?
I wasn't sure where it came from but this is what Wikipedia says about it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toff
I hope that helps.
Margaret
Yeah I like the last suggestion :
The word toff is thought to come from the word tuft, which was a gold tassel worn by titled undergraduates at Oxford University or Cambridge University
Thanks
bloody colonials inDEED ... tsk tsk tsk
I'm no toff but I wouldn't dream of completing "She was only a bar tenders daughter but----"
Hi Margaret,
To get back to Keely Smith, I have a Double Cd (The very best of-)which I think may confirm that she was "one of the best jazz-pop singers of all time", as claimed by the blurb.
She was born Dorothy Keely of Irish/Cherokee descent on 9 Mar 1932 (a year to the day older than yours truly) and sang with Louis Prima, who became her 1st hubby.
She actually sang at Pres.Kennedy's inauguration in1961, and believe it or not at Ronnie Scotts in Aug 2007. Phew!!!
Thank you for that imformation, I must try and hear more of her.
Margaret
As a late comer can I chuck in Bessie Smith. I know she was primarily a blues singer but she got into swing during the later part of her career singing with the great Teagarden amongst others. A great singer eithr way.
