PDF files and printing from Finalé Notepad etc

I found a free application called PDFCreator that seems to do the job

http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/

It does try and install a Yahoo toolbar on your browser, just watch for it during installation and untick it.

If you miss it you can easily delete it using "Add/Remove programmes"

When you select print from the Finale File menu it defaults to Windows XMS, click the drop down and select PDFCreator. Once you have the PDF file you can print from it, or send it as an email or post attachment.

This should also work with other notation programmes and I think it also works with some CAD applications.

Yup, I'm using PDFCreator with Sibelius. It does the job, indeed.

Thanks for the link Mike. I'm not a Finale user (had a problem understanding how it works) but I hope to become 'Finale literate' someday. Since it converts to MuxicXML format, it just might work with other Music Notation programs. I'll try it and see what happens.

In my experience, much of the PDF promises are just that -- promises. Once you get down to the music, the next thing you see is the begging for $$$. Either that, or you get a one-page sample followed by the $$$.

There are probably problems with copyrights, but why is 100-year-old music still not in public domain? These publishers are rats. Like they say, there's no such thing as a free lunch. Once in a while I manage to download something, but that is rather rare. I suppose one can't expect to get something for nothing.

Lovemore - I use Finale and have done now since 1993 so I consider myself a pretty expert user. I must say, it DOES have an incredibly steep learning curve.

I use Acrobat Pro at work. As long as the PDF file is not encrypted I can save it as an image file and import it into Finale as if it is scanned in. I do loose some of the articulation, but at least I don't have to redo everything.
