Hi Panos,
You bet. McCoy Tyner who was associated with Coltrane for some years has an uncanny tonal and harmonic richness to his playing - The way he *revoices* chords, chordal substitutions, using either augmented or diminished ninth, eleventh, or even diminished thirteenth chords and with a left hand that quite often will pound the keyboard. It all makes for an eruptive quality which, AFAIK, no-one else does so quite artistically as McCoy does........In Post-Bop style.
Getting back to the thread topic: Jean Guillou certainly does stretch the harmonic envelope, YIKES!!!

- Maybe his rhythmicity is Prokofievian in nature, n'est-ce pas?
Cheers,
CD

Hi Dorsetmike,
Guillou is known for his *Metaphysically Dissonant* music that grates on just about everbody's nerves, including yours truly. Still, I give him credit for his *explorations*.

Hi to all. Corno you hit me here...'cause at the age of 19 I played exactly as McCoy Tyner, I had copied all off his stuff, 'till "someone" with the name of Tony Scott (clarinet - famous band with Billie Holliday) told me that I had to find Panos and not to be someone else.
He became my teacher and he played(in 1984) everynight with my small quartet (Physis Quartet), for four months....I missed him so much.
So, Guillou is something else and (I'll dare to say that) if John was alive he would certenly play with him - imagine what music they would give to us !!

Hi Panos,
Wow!!! What a stunning revelation you make - thats gutsy. I have never ventured to think that I could play like McCoy. Imvoho he is just too original. Of course, one can mimic McCoy but what then is the fun of it? Thankfully I realised many years ago that it is better to develop your own style, whether it be e.g. Jazz or Classical.
Of course McCoy has inspired me to stretch my jazz harmonies and am thankful to have heard him at the height of his powers.
Cheers,

Exactly as you say, Admiral, great inspiration (for those who want to be inspired ..) he is.
He changed the way I was thinking about piano, him and Keith Jarret of course, among many others.
Like Eberhard Weber, Shostakovich and Prokofiev changed my thinking about composing......

It's just the 6.000 plus posts that hits me.
On the other way, I live with 3 cats and a Golden Retriever, along with my wife and son, so I know something about cats...

Hi Panos,
Stick around for awhile and be plenty loquacious and you'll have lots of postings to your credit. I'm not as much on this forum as I used to be, especially since my wife and I became proud parents of quadruplets - 2 boys and 2 girls not too long ago. So now when they sleep I can then read and write on this forum.
Cheers,
CD

Ps: Do you have *McCoy Tyner plays John Coltrane*? It's a favorite of mine where his trio does such a fine job on Naima and Crescent(Broke Down Piece of Man).

Hi cd !
My best wishes for your sons and girls. And wish you patience and strength...!
My son is now 12 and you went me back when I had to work late at night with headphones... after I had finish my law paper-work...
I've got the record in vinyl...what a raw power this is...sometimes I feel this is the only true music...(I mean John's) and I know I'm overreacting...
Did you know that the Orthodox Church of Chicago declared John Coltrane a Saint ?
Yes, and there is an orthodox Icon of him with his tenor sax on soulder : St.John the Coltrane. It's years now I've seen this in the newspaper. Check it.
Greetings
