    Thanks
Trumpet is certainly up there. Louis Armstrong was able to pull of slides on the trumpet of several pitches. Check out his UP A LAZY RIVER. When he went ot France (the French loved Louis) some musicians asked to see his trumpet after he had pulled that slide off because they were convinced he had modified it in some way. Of course, he didn't.

Also, for me, the clarinet is an amazing instrument. I LOVE hearing those high tones coming form the clarinet playing amoungst a rowdy jazz tune but being so clean and pure.

    Sax as well.

Hell - give me Billy Kyle on piano with his mighty rolls as well.

The Vibraphone/Vibraharp is an interesting instrument and can punch a melody along in the right hands

May I remind you all that the definition of a gentleman is someone who can play the piano accordion, but doesn't.

    Is he Japanese then
I used to play Flute and quite honestly I do not rate it as a jazz instrument just a little bit more than the Recorder, but in folk and classical it is extremely good. IMHO

This thread title made me think piano immediately, and then I thought sax for a sec.
The piano lets you use all ten fingers, the maximum number of notes available to human fingers.
    You can't top that.
It's the instrument for the composers and songwriters, by far, just for that fact,
getting the chord and some bass to define an arrangement, loud enough to sing with.

You can strum the strings with your fingers or hit them with a detached top prop.
And when you say piano now look what a keyboard can be, connected to everything else.
And what other instrument offers you the option of standing instead, kicking over benches,
and letting the lid slam down for emphasis? Some gigs require you to use your feet,
sit on it, let the drummer play it with mallets, play it rolling down streets, through houses,
almost getting hit with one falling on the sidewalk, some with harpsichord options.

Only a piano qualifies as all that.
And how many songs have used the black and white ivories as lyrics?
You know that's gotta be countin'fer somethin', you know that's gotta be countin'fer somethin'.
You know that's gotta be countin'fer somethin', you know that's gotta be countin'fer somethin'.
Whooo... ooh me, black ebony-white ivory, whooo... what will I be?
Now I gotta be dyein' with somethin'... I gotta be dyein' with somethin'

that's not harsh... I still hear his voice...
