• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

Johannus Opus 10 to talk to Hauptwerk

I have a Johannus Opus 10 and I'm trying to use Organ Assist 2.5 to talk to Hauptwerks. I get Organ Assist to recognize the Johannus and transfer the signals down to the Organ Assist Hauptwerk organ. But the Hauptwerk prgram doesn't see it. I'm using LoopB1 to connect.

Hi Glenna,

A little more information will be required before we can really help you... like what organ is loaded in Hauptwerk? Have you configured the Hauptwerk MIDI Inputs and matched them to that organ settings? It might be best to visit the Hauptwerk forum and read through some of the posts there as others have done this and have it working. If you're using LoopBe1 I'd assume you're on a 64-bit computer, is it Windows XP, Vista, or Win7?

Thank you ggoode.sa I am trying to get Hauptwerks (say just with the St Ann Moesly organ) torecognize the expression pedal, stops and pistons of my Johannus Opus 10 organ. I have rerouted the keyboard midi channels to match my Johannus organ but when I try to get Organ Assist to rerout the other controles Hauptwerk doesn't recognize them. I mapped the Johannus with the automatic learn the keyboards and stops. Whan I run Organ Assist and Hauptwerks I see the stops being depressed on the Organ Assist St Ann but the Hauptwerks St Ann organ does not see the stop changes. The Hauptwerk plays what I'm playing on the Johannus but does not see the stip changes I make on the Johannus. Hope this is more clear.

Hi Glenna,
It seems that the step you are missing is configuring Hauptwerk to recieve the Stop changing MIDI messages. Have a look at this tutorial: http://www.sth-steel.fi/~graham/Interfacing_a_jOrgan_GUI_with_Hauptwerk.pdf . It is written by a friend who is using jOrgan to control Hauptwerk in a similar manner to how you are using Organ Assist. You can skip all the info about the jOrgan configuration and go to the Hauptwerk section, particularly Task 3 - Configuring Switch MIDI inputs - variable parameters on p23 and following.
If you have any questions do ask!

I got it to work with a lot of tinkering. Thank you ggode.sa the link was helpful especially the page that translated the MIDI Channel to Note-on/off values.

Hi Glenna,
I'm glad to hear that you got it working! Hopefully Hauptwerk 4.0 will be somewhat easier to configure, MIDI-wise, as all that 'tinkering' takes time!
Have fun!

Now I have everything working with Ogan Assist except the expression pedals. Does anyone know how to make them work with Hauptwerk? I am able to get Hauptwerk to see my Johannus expression pedals when I connect Midi directly to Hauptwerk but not when I send it through Organ Assist. And the LoopBe Midi channel.

What version of hauptwerk do you have?

Hi Glenna !
Do you mean that you connect your Johannus with a midi/usb interface and then went to Hw - continuus controls assignments, and you set the appropriate midi ch & controller for pedals ?
In my set-up(with Yamaha EL-900) it's midi controller no.11 for cressendos (right pedal)and no.4 for swells(left pedal) all in ch16(Yamaha default).

I got Organ assistant and LoopBe 1, but so far I haven't use them cause I work OK with my simpler set-up (Organ console-USB interface-HW3-pc out-active speakers)
Also keep in mind that HW saves a lotta stuff for makin' our work easier :)

I am using the latest HW 3.21 I believe. It recognizes the expression pedals directly. But when I try to use the expression pedals with Organ Assist 2.5 it does not see the changes. I am using Organ Assist and LoopBe1 with my organ on Hauptwerk. It changes the stops and even the crasendo pedal but it won't recognize the expression pedals from my organ.

Hi again glenna !

Why using assistant to chang the stops. HW can be assigned to see the changes right from your organ. Or even better to change generals with your pistons from Johannus.
3.21 I got too.
Is Johannus not sending CX (program change) from its pistons?
If yes on what channel? Assign that channel directly to HW(switch controls)

Hi Guys,

@ Panos, when using OrganAssist Glenna can record MIDI and play it back, create play lists, and organise her interface is a different manner to HW.

@ Glenna, please use a MIDI monitor (like MIDI-OX) to test what information is coming out of Organ Assist. As I don't use it I can't diagnose what is wrong, but a MIDI monitor should show you whether MIDI signals are being sent from Organ Assist out to HW, and if they are being sent, then it will show you what those MIDI signals are. Shout if you need help with MIDI-OX (www.midiox.com).

Hi graham thanks for point out these ! I have them both I still don't use them. I only use MidiMedic from OrganWorks as a simple monitor and it showed me some pretty stuff here in some difficult situations....

I used Organ Assist because it seemed the easiest way to use Hauptwerk with my organ and other virtual organs. I could reconfigure each organ to match my stops. My Johannus uses channel 12 for stop information. Program change 0-8 Pedal, 10-19 Swell, 21-30 Great, 32-38 Accessories and 40-44 special voices. The presets, general and divisional combinations sen System Exclusive messages and send the stop values that change. I am not sure how to set up Hauptwerk to recognize my stops. Organ Assist has a caputure mode to get the information directly from the organ switches.

This is my problem too : sys exclusive. I know witch sends in witch, I know the codes but I didn't manage to make HW or any other virtual instrument to recognise them.(Midi medic can reed the sys ex codes)
I'll give a try with jOrgan as this thing has this easy feature to reccon what you send and if you like to make it to work.
I 'm also reading (and learning) that jOrgan can control anything , from any other VPO (HW included) to real pipes !
Graham did manage to control GrandOrgue with jOrgan as front end (see thread).
So I believe I'll give it a try and we talk again.

Cheers

Hi Guys,

For using SysEx MIDI message with VPO and other midi software - use Bome's MIDI Translator to convert the SysEx message into any other MIDI message that will be understood by GrandOrgue/Hauptwerk/jOrgan/OrganAssist/etc.

You will likely need to use virtual MIDI cables to send the converted messages to the application, but it should be possible to use every MIDI message that comes from the Johannus console for control of something in your software...

Try it and see if it works for you:
http://www.bome.com/products/miditranslator
(their Classic Edition is free and does SysEx translation...)

All my stop selections are passed on to Hauptwerk, so the cresendo pedal simply changes the stop list and it works fine. I got the expression pedals to work by using the Johannus code (Swell B1 0B FF, Great B0 0B FF, Pedal B2 0B FF).

I just use the piston setting from the Johannus and it selects the stops like the cresendo pedal or just select stops. That way you don't have to use the SysEx messages.

I use Organ Assist with LoopeBe1 to connect the virtual Hauptwerk organ with the Organ Assist organ. You have to create organs in Organ Assist to match the virtual organs you want to use. I have about ten of the now, all free.
