Dunno Mat, good question and heplful, but as far as I know everything Reaper has inside is controllable from outside.
Your M-Audio 88ES has a data slider so I know what you mean and for what reason... he he

I have to look on manual a bit to confirm the procedure.

    Panos,

I went on the Net and figured it all out. As you suspected, it is possible. So, here's how to do it (in case anyone else needs it):

From Menu bar choose Actions->Show action list->then find Track: Set volume for track 01, 02, 03, etc... (MIDI CC only)->Add shortcut for selected action->Move the desired slider [or is it fader?]->click OK and you're ready to go.

Not as intuitive as in HW v4 for example, but it gets the job done. Use the same pattern to assign buttons/sliders/faders/knobs/whatever to hundreds of other actions in Reaper.
