Hello there,

I'm in the final year of a music degree, and have reached that point where its like....'s**t what do i do now???"....Over the past few years Ive dabbled in pop song writing, but feel I have found my niche within film composition....

For one of my final assignments I had to create 6 minutes worth of music, for an extract of David Attenborough's 'Planet Earth'.... I enjoyed doing this far above anything Ive ever done before....and without blowing my own trumpet toooo much...actually got very positive feedback from my lecturers for it!....talk about a major confidence booster!

So my question to anyone who reads this is....How does one actually go about getting hired by the right people in the biz, to score/create music for a particular film,or television program???....what should i do now, as the next step...on a quest for film score domination???

any help, and advice is greatly appreciated :) ....and im sorry about the wafflin!

You are speaking of a field that is saturated with musicians trying to do the same thing as you. May I suggest, be truthful to yourself and your music. Be original and avoid musical cliches. Try to get in with Ad agencies and whip out a few commercials. Usually from there people will hear your work. A lot can be said about your competence in a 30 second add.

Sage advise there, robmcw ... (and welcome back, btw,, we've missed you around these parts)

Only to add that another possibility would be to team up with another person already in the business, perhaps as an apprentice. In that manner, one could gain hoards of experience, and eventually might be able to work in a few creations of your own with the help from your mentor.

Thanks sooo much for the advice, its greatly appreciated...I have been looking into music for advertising (well more into the ways of getting my music heard, by advertising companies!) So to hear that from you Rob, reassures me that I'm on the right track (idea's wise..)

Also I know some british shows like 'skins' like unsigned musicians to put forward their music. So I'm definitely going to try this, having never been confident enough with my work, to do so before...

Once again thanks for the advice guys :D

Greetings Charlotte,
I agree with rbmcw where in order to stand out above the "crowd" you need to really show your uniqueness. Just like any business, you need to find out what makes you unique-what does Charlotte have to offer that no one else has. As you know, there are lots of cats who can do what you do- the one's who are successful are extremely passionate and stand out because of their uniqueness.
And of course you need to get out there and network with folks in your world.
