Palace of Arts -Budapest- Hauptwer Sample set.

    Hello there,

This sample set by Inspired Acoustics has been released for quite some time, but there are some things which make it kinda unique.

Apart from its price (~1000$) which is quite high for a sample set, it has many features which other sets dont have.

The instrument has 92 stops, which are all recorded seperately , note by note at 192 kHz / 24-bit , with many samples per note. Interesting fact is that some of the samples are over 40 Seconds in lenght.

Though, it might not be a Historical instrument, i believe it is a really nice alternative, if one wants to convert his hauptwerk instrument to a more concert oriented organ for more general uses lets say, compared to a strictly baroque or romantic instrument. Since the reverb in the concert hall is absent, for those who want a more wet sound Inspired acoustics feature an artificial reverbation program which allows many kinds of reverbs to be used.

It is worth saying that the extended edition of the organ, is 68 Gigabites in size, and requres at least 16 GB of RAM and a high end CPU to run with a good level of polyphony.
The stoplist of the organ can be found here:
    http://www.inspiredacoustics.com/pro...p?idtermekek=8

Inspired Acoustics has also released a new sample set of the Matyas symphonic Organ, with 85 stops.

NOTE: I am just reviewing the elements mentioned above, by what i have heard seen, and read about the organ and its counterparts. I have not played the actual hauptwerk sample set though, and neither have i played the real version of the organ. It would be nice ,if someone has previous experience with this instrument, to share it with us.
Additional info can be found here:

    Cheers,
    Nicholas

    Γειά σου Νικόλα !

The ultimate and best HW3 set so far no doubt !
But one for people with lots of euros to spend....

Consider that this set needs the top HW set-up there is, expencive Quad core CPU, two touch screens 17', 20GB memory ram, expencive external sound card (1000euros), Great amplification/speakers (4 self powered 200w each studio monitors with special stands + 500w active subwoofer) the advanced version of HW3 and a special build console/pedals.

    All these sum-up to beyond 20.000euros !!!!

I didn't even try to download it from Milan (as demo) as I did with Notre Dame de Laaken set (needs 13GB mem) and loaded just a few stops just to hear it sing something...

So, I don't believe there is someone of our friends here who actualy tried this set to tell us about...but then again, who knows...maybe there is!

    We'll wait
    'till then....
    Cheers

I have it, have used it and enjoy it. Perhaps I'll post some recordings and my impressions when I have some free time to do so.

Ok, now I have some time to comment a bit (too sleepy yesterday to write intelligently!)

The PAB sample set is very flexible, and voiced very well. My only reservations about it were the "perfect" sound (a real organ is not so perfectly in tune!) and the immediacy or dryness of the recorded sound. Since I wanted to use convolution reverb anyway, the dryness was not an issue in the long run. One can also bump up the random detuning of HW a bit and make it sound more realistic (or if you are using the Advanced version of HW, simply detune some notes, but that takes a lot of time!)

It has taken a bit of time to explore the many stops, but I've found one can play pretty much any organ genre convincingly. With the releases truncated and using convolution reverb, the memory use is quite acceptable, and I have yet to overload my processor when using it this way (even in full registrations and big fast chords/arpeggios)

Here is a piece for your listening pleasure - Henry Martin's 6th Prelude and Fugue (part of an ongoing series of 24, soon to be released!)

    Enjoy,

    - G

    Hello Giwro,

Thanks a lot for replying to the thread!

If you dont mind, what is your PC specs?

Yea, i know about the dryness of the samples, but since there is a reverb manager it is not a problem.
How exactly that Deture feature works in HW3 advanced?

Thanks a lot for providing us with interesting info ;-)

    Nick.

    You are very welcome!

My PC is an Intel i7 Quad-core (the OS actually "sees" it as having 8 cores) 12gb RAM, Vista Ultimate 64-bit, 500gb HD

In HW advanced, one can voice individual notes of each stop - (level, EQ, tuning, etc.)

I apply my reverb by running PAB as a VSTi in Bidule, reverb added by the VST Reverberate (impulse response/convolution reverb).

While it is indeed possible to apply reverb after the fact, different acoustics will change the way I interpret a piece.

    Best,

    - G

    I see!
It would be interesting if you could make a small stop demonstration (you know just the simple things, some reed mixtures and principal choruses) so we can hear the the seperate stops.

    Thanks again,
    Nick

Hi G ! and very very much thanks for your replies !!

What a great set this is. I enjoyed the PF a lot !

Is Henry Martin playin' his piece or you ? I liked much. I'm gonna get the Gm and Em also.

I agree with the cutting of release samples in HW and adding Convolution (see my post thread about VSTi version of HW) one can mix his own preference and get an extra motivation during performance.Reverb leeds you to play different in many cases.

I also use ReverberateLE with lots of impulses and for some time I tried the Reverberate x64 with its true stereo option (4 channels), but something was wrong with it in the final image and I uninstalled it.

I now use the excellent SIR2 with some Penguin impulses in true stereo. The result is fascinating !! also, I add to the final mix the FERIC TDS tape emulation witch gives rich harmonics and dynamics , if you don't have it, get it now!

Hybrid reverb has the option of setting the distance of audition in meters and a large library.Voxengo also has one of the best convolvers but is more compicated.

    Greetings

    Glad you liked the piece!

Neither Henry nor I played it - what you heard was Finale driving HW(!)

Usually when I do these mock-ups for a composer, I'm working either from a Finale or MIDI file. Frequently the works are quite virtuosic, and I simply do not have the time to learn each one. Finale + Human Playback + additional tweaking of the exported MIDI = expressive "believable" render.

Nick asked for more demos, specifically single stops....

Right now I'm afraid that I wouldn't have the time for that. I will post a couple more mp3's though. This one is a rare piece by French composer Jean Vadon, showing the wonderful Chamades.

Great work with Finale ! I'm using Sibelius extencively (I now updated to 6.1) and never went to this approach, witch is certaintly faster than learn huge pieces..I use it to write down my own compositions and mostly the instruments parts for the members of my band or else on what to play.

Though I got a Hauptwerk(x32).dll inside Sibelius, I never so far tried to write something with...I use direct rec out of HW. I like live recording better, but there are cases when computerizing is nessesary....

Thanks for the new piece, Great Chamades !

Actually, I've not used HW as a VSTi in Finale... I have a separate PC that runs Finale and a dedicated one that runs HW. I do all of my recording this way - the HW PC never goes on the internet and is solely for HW.

Here is another piece recorded on the PAB, this one a rare L'annunciation by Reveyron.
