    Good guess

    I think that there is also a need to look at the smaller aspects of form also; Phrase/sentence structure (which are generally miniature ABs or ABAs), particularly if you need a short 'filler'. I always think of things interms of the cadence I want to get to, to establish a key for the next hymn etc.

    The way I learned is quite simple. When you are practicing improvisation, just explore sounds and different chord structures - it works. What I first did as well was a tecnicque tought to me by my organ teacher: on one manual you pull out a single viol celeste stop and another a single principle stop. While you play quiet, clashing but sensible chords with the celeste, play single notes on the other manual with the principle. It isn't exactly david Briggs standards but it does help for times like just before the service and Communion!
