• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

English Parish Organ for jORGAN -My First

Hello to all !:)

I was so impressed from DorsetMike's thread for Old Englishe Organs and his great idea of tryin' a VPO example of one of them, that I got to work with all free materials I had in my possesion to get one out !

Finally I managed to end up with my first disposition for jOrgan 3.10(latest) and I'm very happy with it. So happy I want to share it with everyone.
So here it is for free download. Is in Beta1 and I would like to hear any suggestion from anyone.
I used original English stops samples ect - Read the info text included in the file.;)

I dedicated this disposition to my friend Mike of Dorset, for his love & affection to English organs and composers. Play the recorder, there's a Boyce voluntary inside.
Also I'm greatful to Graham for his invaluable advice and help !:)

Enjoy !

Hi Panos,

Great work :) I'm glad that others now get a chance to play with this little gem.

Happy playing!

Thanks for a great little organ. I have been unsuccessful playing the midi sample. It loads up on mediaplayer and I do not hear anything. Any suggestions?

Will Jorgan accept a midi file input? I know GO does, not used Jorgan though. A midi file needs a midi device or application the play

Panos, can you generate an MP3 instead of a midi?

jOrgan has an inbuilt Recorder function which can be accessed via the "View". The .mid file which comes with Panos's download works with that Recorder. It needs to be loaded into the Recorder after clicking on the black icon are the far right of the Recorder view and then navigating to the .mid file and opening it. I don't know if that .mid file will work with standard sequencers.

Regarding no sound, have you loaded the soundfont into the Fluidsynth element (using the Construct mode)? If while in the Construct mode you click on "Problems", you may be told there what you have failed to do. Also, there is a Customize function, invaluable for newbies, which is accessed via "File"

jOrgan can be difficult to get going if you don't really know what you are doing. I had no trouble getting Panos's organ to sound, but I suspect that it did not work "out of the box" (I don't remember), and if this is the case, it may mean that Panos did not get the protocol quite right. One thing I do remember, is that as downloaded, it works initially with the jOrgan keyboard functioning. This is certainly a correct part of the set-up protocol, as you can test for sounds and stops before you introduce your own keyboards/MIDI interface.

You may find it helpful to take any woes to the jOrgan Forum.

Hi Guys,

Analogicus is right about the midi file being for the jOrgan MIDI recorder/player only. It will not play succesfully in a general midi playback application. So get the organ working soundwise first with the jOrgan keyboard (right click on the keyboard element to change MIDI channels), then once that is sorted out - follow the advice above about loading the .mid file and playing it.

Let us know if you still need a bit more help :)

OK guys, I got a link again after two days !:)

Hello again.

There's so much goin' on with this little organ dispo I did and I think this is goin' bigger that I thought.

It started as an experiment following an idea of Mike here and allready now there's many people who have downloaded it and testet, even I got a message in jOrgan users forum from Marco Francesco who allready played with Russell in Church at Sunday service and all went very well !!
Follow Analogicus instructions with the midi file. and Graham's.

To get the REC/STOP/PLAY buttons work for the first time you open a disposition you need to open the recorder (from view) at least one time, see if the midi file is in and then close it. This way works on any jOrgan disposition I got (I believe all of them!) - In B.Casper's Cavaille'-Coll there isn't a recorder on the console, BUT there are three C.Frank's pieces in the recorder !!!(just open it from view and choose-play)

Recorder in jOrgan is a sequencer who writes midi events and plays them back exactly the same way one recorded them. You can also write separate each manual, pedal and in a different channel the changes on stops, swell pedals ect. All these are placed in the recorder element - open it in the "view"
Clickin' the red dot it becomes pink, so it does not record anything.
You will need a metronome of course to do everything on time;)

Some aknowledgement about this "midi" file.
Inside this madness:crazy: of creating a good example of Russell organ, I forgot to mention (shame on me...:banghead:) that the Boyce Voluntary in G is PERFORMED by JOHN REIMER -Sydney, AUS- himself and you also can find it in his excellent EARLWOOD 2 (new) Australian organ disposition for jOrgan 9.4 (where I got it).
Thank you John. He played great. I just wanted to add a piece of music that sticked best with an English Parish organ. I preset open diap 8' and Fifteenth 2' along with Bach/Lehman tuning for playin' this piece with Russell recorder, but you can make any combination you like, even full stops open ! still the piece sounds great.

There are some issues with the samples that need to be fixed : Open diapason8, Stopped diapassons8, Principal4' and Fifteenth2' with their tracker sound and droping level in 2' and to get all the stops in full stereo.

I worked all Monday fixin' things and I allready have Beta2 version ready to post it to you for test.
I'm waitin' the OK from Bernd Casper for using his bronge labels for the stop names - very very close to originals - I allready have permition from Pastor Paul C. Stratman for the use of his excellent Silbermann stops I modified to get closer to original English stop levers : they are brown/black and slim without that dot in the middle....
Thank you Paul !

I'm also finnished two small Continuo/Choir Walther organs from StFlorent and St.Guillaume in the Strasbourg area. Very good for joint work (orch/choir) and practice and two versions of Walther organ in Oberhausbergen Ste Odile with it's real samples from Joseph Basquin of Jeux d' Ogues site. I'm waiting permition from Joseph to proceed (he's on holidays too....).

I played with my Beta 2 version of Russell and found it far better than Beta1.
I'll post it soon.

Thank you all !:)

Mike, I can record jOrgans audio output into REAPER and then come up with a .wav, .ogg or .mp3 file. Yes.
Also REAPER can make a standard Midi file of it for general use !!

I need permission from John Reimer to do these modifications though.

I can try to input a standard midi file to jorgan using the "open file" in it's recorder and see what's goin' on:grin:

And another thing about jOrgan.
It can play with much larger banks with lots of MBs even GB ! I played GO sets (in sf2 format) in jOrgan with no obvious differences. I'm thinkin' of makin' a Stihr-Mockers version...
So we got here a Triptychon : HW - GO - jO of great VPOs !!

Cheers

Panos,
You have my permission.
There, I've blown my user-name cover!

But before you do it, can you edit the .mid file to reduce that unfortunate pause about 60% along in the piece? I haven't a clue how to do that.

Panos if you have trouble editing a midi file I may be able to help, I found an application which lets me edit them. I used it to add stop controls for GO and that gave me a good insight into how things are done.

Hi Analogicus...!
Sorry for that uncover....I allready uncovered myself on the Russell console:grin:

There's something else John Reimer did. He gave us great advice on how to solve jOrgan issues with his text files and in Bill Skees' manuals and also gave us three beautiful organs to enjoy our selves and some audience:up:

I do not remember this 60% pause...I'll have to listen again.
But if there is some pause it's easy to eliminate it with a dedicated sequencer.
In my Motif ES6 workstation I can do anything I want, even add pauses for as long as I wish.
I can copy the jOrgan sequence to Motif and edit and then reload. But I'm still on holidays away from my studio. I got REAPER with me though and I must see if it can do these things as well;)

Thank you for your great voluntary, I'll give details in a new text in Beta2.
If I manage to do a good mp3 I'll upload it here in two versions, one with Earlwood2 and one with Russell and probably both in York Minster:)

Cheers

OK Mike !

I'll try with Reaper and if not success you can edit it with your program ! then I can do a good mp3 of it to post it here.

I always knew we were privileged to be in good company here at MIMF and now the word is out on several of our members. It's no wonder we get such fantastic advice since we are in the presence of the actual creators of so many wonderful VPOs and their incredible sounds. Now it's a little humbling...;)

Panos, I took your advice and downloaded a trial of reaper on my laptop. It has already expired tho. I have win 7 32 bit on my lappy and the music tower in the other room is win 7 64 bit and it has a full version of reaper that since so many forums give it the thumbs up I wanted to join the crowd of pleased users.

While sorting through old discs and paperwork the other day (I was actually looking for some info that my mum had sent me a year or two ago for my family tree research) and came across 2 discs for Ableton Live Lite that came with different equipment that I had purchased over the past couple years. For the heck of it, I installed one on my laptop. It was version 4, even tho the label said it was version 6 but when I attempted to use it I was prompted for a serial number which neither disc carried on their jackets. I wrote to M-Audio and to Ableton and since I had registered my purchases back when they sent me a link to download the current version (8) and provided a serial number to authorize it.

I did that last night and watched their vid on the net. Such a user-friendly application and I had some enjoyment by listening for a couple of hours to some nice Irving Berlin pieces that were recorded on Diskclavier from http://http://www.kuhmann.com/Yamaha.htm

There are so many pieces of work here for the piano that were recorded on the diskclavier that are available for download, including some utilities that convert their native format (fil) to midi. The conversion is instant and the result was hours of listening pleasure.

I decided to open the files in Ableton and used the different pianos included in the lite version and their HUGE selection of FX halls, etc. and the result was very pleasant. Naturally, I also changed the instrument to organ and other synths and changed parameters to hear variations in sound - some great, others too weird but fun nonetheless. I love the midi files for their tiny size yet wonderful sound in applications. Virtually any type of plug-in works as well.

Really, I just wanted to provide the link for all of the piano lovers as there is mainly classical music, but not restricted to just that category. There are some beautiful arrangements.

Hi Stephen, glad to hear from you again !
Did you like St.Clement-Russell? I have ready Beta2 version(better!), just some small fixes...

How Reaper expired? There's no trial and full versions, just one (Full). the latest is 366.
Even if it tells you that after 30 days use you have to buy a licence, it doesn't stop workin', just won't let you down.
Try to send jOrgan's audio out to Reaper and do a recording(ading your favourite reverb of course and some master enhaser). Fabulous resoults !
I'll send in a day or two John Reimer's performance on Boyce voluntary in G, to proove my point.

I know Ableton. One of the best. But There's too much for me to get involved with another and new app. Still learning the ones I got for some time now..
Thanks for the link. Enjoyed much !

I 'm gonna "fix" myself an official site or something, so I could upload my jOrgan dispositions and other things I like to share for free download from all.I just try different offerings...

Hi Panos,

I guess the reaper was just a nag screen. I reinstalled it again - thanks for the heads up :)

As for the St. Clement-Russell - what do you think? I LOVE the sound of it. Now I have plenty to keep me busy all winter. Looking forward to the next version, if you say it is even better. Keep up the great work!
