    text message

Are text messages sending you to the poor house. I just lost
$15.00 from my phone from someone texting me. Does any
one else have that problem? I have to buy my minutes.

It would be interesting to see where the money went Judy. Did you have to reply to the text? There is a scam being used over here where some one asks to borrow you phone because of an emergency (accident, mother in hospital, been robbed etc etc) they dial a number which is linked to a premium rate, as much as £15.00 just for the connection, hold a ficticious conversation for a few seconds, then hand the phone back. You think, that was a short call, it won't cost me much. Then you get the bill.

I have a "Pay as you go" phone, no charges for incoming calls nor texts. The only reason I have a mobile phone is for occasions when I am driving away from town in case of a breakdown, or to liaise with someone I am meeting in a location away from landlines.

I most cases if one plans one's day correctly there should be no need for mobile phones, I managed for over 70 years without one. I can see a need for service engineers on call having one, but not the person in the supermarket calling home "can you look in the cupboard and see if we need any ... ...?) I don't see the sense of paying 4 or 5 times the amount per minute for a mobile call than I pay for a landline call.

I would not use a network where I had to pay for incoming calls.
    Cheers MIKE.

I guess by now all of you know I live in the state of Kentucky.
My town is Madisonville,ky.. This text came to me from San
Fransisco and another one well came from some group wanting
to know if I owed taxes. Another one sent me one from some
strange number like 91097 saying "A key to good flirting is always
starts with eye contact. Stuff like that or can I say crap?
I finally listed my phone on the Do Not Call list but people can
still get through that even. Thank goodness I don't run my
cell phone on some plan or I would end up with a bill I can't
pay. This stuff stinks like a skunk! It's different if my best
friend sends me a small one who is in the parking lot five feet
away from me. That one is free when she texts me. My phone
is a pay as you go phone. Sometimes I can only afford 15
    minutes for it.

Because I have an old phone I pay £5.00 per month which gives me 50 minuets plus texts. If I need more I phone them up and top up from my dedit card. I am more aware of my usage like this and can not be ripped off for more than £5.00. My old phone makes phone calls. No bells. No whistles. I believe it runs on steam.

Also beware of the mom and pop shops that sell computers
and Cell phone minutes? It can also be a big rip off like I
just got burnt the other day on that one. If I go to At&t
or Walmart to buy minutes I know I have it. But this place
I went to wednesday just took my 15 dollars this time.
I lost fifteen minutes as soon as I left the building.
    What a rip off!.

Sorry to hear that Judy, what a rip off. Make sure you only go to a reputable shop. I have a "pay as you go" phone, I only take when I go shopping or out on my own. I only have one friend who I text and she will text me.

    Judy,

Your mobile carrier can, at your request, put a block on all incoming text messages. As is the case with most mobile carriers, the user is responsible for all text messaging, whether they wanted them or not. I have that block on mine, but I can still send outgoing text messages at 10 cents each.

My mobile phone is my lifeline ... it's on 24/7 and it's the way for family, friends and church to get hold of me ... I've never used anything close to my allotment of 'anytime' minutes (400) in any month. Being as my service is with Verizon, all mobile calls between Verizon users are free regardless of the time of day.

We do have a landline though ... mainly so telemarketers can annoy us .

Its about time the providers got their act together. How come one provider offers 100 minuets and the next one 300 hundred, for the same price.????? I have my own phone, so tend to get a better than average deal. But when they are trying to get you to upgrade your phone at the end of a contract, they never suggest retaining you existing phone, and benefiting from a cheaper contract.
