artists you like that are not jazz performers

we are all hard core jazz fans, right. now lets have some fun, is there any performers not jazz that you are embarrassed too admit that you really like. i will start this off (with a red face), i really like pink floyd, and worst still i like george formby. now lets see if anybody else is willing to admit liking some pop artists, i will bet not many will take part in this thread.

I agree Sven with your last statement.

I saw Renaissance live twice, have most of their LPs, Focus are still touring!

Another good thread gord. Pink Floyd. Definitely. Joni Mitchell for her lilting voice and versatility. I have seen her play along side Johnny Cash and Eric Clapton with equeal ease. Simon and Garfunkel stole my heart away with tracks like America. The Beach Boys for the fun they produced. There is more. I shall return.

I see no shame in being interested in more than one genre.

Besides jazz and classical music of course, I like such groups as Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Metallica (The Call Of The Ktulu!!), Queen, Nightwish, Limp Bizkit, Annie Lenox, Sting, Depeche Mode and many others.

There's also a lot of Polish performers I like but is there a point in listing them here?

Now, few words about pop. I hate it and despise it. At least contemporary pop. However, I must admit that I do like some songs from the late 80s and early 90s but that's it.

    You were wrong Gord,
I doubt if any of us are frightened to admit that we still like the pop of our youth.
    (What I call classic pop).

I personally have a large number of CDs (many converted from vinyl) of Bing Crosby,
Frank Sinatra, Jack Jones, Perry Como, Doris Day, Frankie Laine, Nat King Cole and many others of that ilk.
I am still fond of The Beatles and the Stones and other groups of the 60s to 80s
(especially Tears for Fears) although to me standards have lowered since then.
Since I am also keen on Classical, Opera and Ballet music and many of the Musicals
produced from the 30s to recently, I think I can claim to be a versatile music fan,
without any need to hide. (Although my two sons mock my love of Jazz in particular,
and my eldest two grandsons listen on their iphones to music? which is to me totally incomprehensible).
You know, I do believe that it is the younger generations who are intolerant to the favourite music of others.

    Cheers John

Just purchased an album on the edge of Jazz, Mel Tormé and Cleo Laine, two of my favourite singers, I'm surprised they hadn't got together earlier, this was a 2008 release.

I've played the Mel Torme/Cleo Laine through, it's closer to jazz than I first expected, the voices blend very well, some good arrangements, well worth a listen, Amazon samples on this link, try tracks 3-6, 8, 11 & 14 for starters,

    Cheers MIKE.

The Rolling Stones - Their early work was pure R&B. I still miss Brian Jones.

i have loved jazz since i was 12. there are a few pop singers i really like. tennessee ernie ford, hank snow and tex ritter in c&w. i also like eddie cochrane, chuck berry and georgie fame (i always thought fame was the best of all the rock singers in the 60s). the music he records today is first class jazz. gord

John Martyn. I was lucky enough to see him live three times. He moved from folk through blues to rock seamlessly.
