    If you had...

    Hi all!

Imagine that you had UNLIMITED money and lots of space and you wanted to have an organ on that space. What would be its disposition? Would it be german type? Or maybe french? Or theatre? Or a little bit from every type?

How you imagine the organ of your dreams?

No quandry for me, something as close as possible to the St Sulpice organ (preferably in a space about the same size, and perhaps with modern performance aids). In the absence of Aristide C-C himself, I'd probably ask Lively & Fulcher if they'd feel like tackling such a project.

Anyway, that's all a fantasy for another life, another time, another universe!

I don't play myself, but I think I'd like to clone the Wimborne Minster organ, then fly all you good players out there over here to play for me!

On this post there's nothing too big. This post is for those who have much imagination and don't want a limited organ. This is to know what is your view of an unlimited organ. An organ were all your favourite pieces or where every literature is possible to play.

An interesting 'what if' very dependant on the building, but assuming something appropriately large and friendly...

I would go with Soubasse up to a point and make additions along the lines of Lincoln cathedral organ - nothing like a typical English 'Full Swell' sound. For those not familiar with it, it sounds like the gates of hell opening as you open the box :-)

I'd go for several consoles, the St Sulpice as is, a German baroque one - possibly a Bach-type replica and a basically Eniglish draw-stop console to my own individual specification... over to an organ builder to sort out the action!!

For my favourite pieces (Bach/Buxtehude/Pachelbel/Frescobaldi/Praetorius/Couperin/Boyce/Purcell/Bohm) I want just the Freiberg Cathedral Silbermann.

For every literature Notre-Dame de Laaken Cavaille-Coll.

    Is that Ok Lombardo ?

    Cheers

For me.... not an unlimited space, but a limited space in the form of a very large studio apt..... a former bank bldg in Italianate/Greek Revival/Beaux-Art (just a vision).

Tonally, the organ would be an Atlantic City Midmer-Losh in miniature (52 ranks). Most ranks are unified, enclosed, spread among 4 swell boxes, which are adjoined to one another (an idea I got from a diagram Senator Richards drew up).

Wind pressures at 10", 15", and 25". Softest (Viola Sorda 8', 4') to the loudest (Ophicleide 32', 16', 8', 4'). Italian Renaissance case and console (4 manuals with stop keys). Placed near the center of the banking floor. The Echo would be in the ceiling. My sleeping quarters would be a partitioned-off corner.

Here's the tonal analysis, since a full stop list would take up too much space:

    Unenclosed (*= originates on Pedal)

    Contra Bass 32' (16', 10 2/3', 8', 5 1/3', 4'); 15" *
    Open Wood 16' (8', 4'); 15" *
    Double Diapason 16' (10 2/3', 8', 5 1/3', 4'); 10"
    Bourdon 16' (10 2/3', 8', 5 1/3', 4'); 10" *
    1st Diapason 8'; 15"
    1st Principal 4'; 15"

    Fifteenth 2'; 10"
    Double Ophicleide 32' (16', 8', 4'); 25" *

Having recently played the Wimborne Minster organ ... thanks to Mike ... that would be a grand choice, maybe with a little more lively acoustics and a little bit different horizontal reed .

For myself, I could clone the IV/79 Wurlitzer that's in Mesa, Arizona, without the console pit.

I know many who have done this. My teacher Dr Hammer had a nice Abbot and Seiker tracker action organ in her living room, which was one of two house pipe organs she had. My fave is still the Harold tracker at Alan Kays house. Here is real a knockout one near my house in Az.

Very interesting and informative site Mush. Would be a delight to playthis instrument. Just goes to show what a little love( and money) can accomplish.

Well, Speaking leterally, if I had UNLIMITED money as you say, i would buy EVERYTHING :-)
But if you are reffering to organs, i would probably compose one which would combine Baroque styles, like a clone of a Silberman organ in conjunction with an Arp Schnitger, as well as every single aspect of a Cavaille coll. I would also make the case majestic.
