• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

Individual Stops Sample Sets!

I certainly do not want to undermine the work some people have done in sampling entire pipe organs; but from my perspective, where I am trying to bring life back to an orphaned pipe organ console, all I am looking for are a few specific stops. On the console I am converting, there is a Quintaton 16' stop. From what I have read, there is no real substitute for this stop. There are a few commercial sets that have a Quintaton, but I could not find one in the available free sets... And then I stumbled upon Jean-Paul's Quintaton 8' Stop Set for $2.44 (USD)! This is what I am looking for!!! I purchased the stop set immediately!

It would be nice if some of the owners of commercial sets would consider releasing individual stop sample sets at an affordable price so that those of us using GrandOrgue would have more access to the stops we need. I find it hard to shell out $200 for a commercial set when I am only looking for one or two stops in the collection. But I would certainly consider paying a few dollars for the specific stops I need to complete my console project!

My friend Jay if I had the quintadon stop I would certainly send it to you imediately and for free

Commercial companies charge a lot of money for their sets _ I KNOW how hard work is needed to complete a set_ in a time when people live in the period of the thin cows.....

Friendship and support we need, not proffit !

Panos,

I appreciate the offer! Actually, I certainly did not mind sending Jean-Paul a few dollars as he had helped me with my Moller organ definition. I am with you on helping each other in our community!

Take Care,
Jay

One other thought I had on this topic, especially considering the ongoing interest in GrandOrgue, is that people may once again be looking for older sample sets. This could spark some additional revenue for the owners of these samples. Also, with new sets, as long as they are willing to release the WAV files per stop, they would be opening an availability to GrandOrgue users instead of just Hauptwerk 3 users.

By the way, I just completed a working ODF with 47 sounding stops!!! My first ODF was for a console with only 17 sounding stops. The total number of pipes comes in at 2.25GB. I have not yet tested performance in 32-bit windows, but I am hopeful!!!

Hi Jay,

47 stops ! Good news, it sounds like a 3manual, no?

My belief is that every sample set that comes free on the web, even is for HW1,2,3, GO, jOrgan, solo sf2 banks, Kontakt (has wav inside) ect must be declared from the start of it's release as free for all and usable from all with just mention the creators and not to be used commercialy for proffit.
I did that in the 'read me' file in my dispositions for jOrgan.
This way we can use whatever stop from whatever set and make a new custom organ for our selves and for the comnunity and enjoy and create music.

There's another way of course. To make our own samples and share them. This is the best but difficult.
My wife said the other day that is a shame that I'm workin' too much for these free organs without gain of a ,say, small proffit.
I said, yes, hard work, but no I'll give them free for all.

regards
Panos

PS. very good and rare nightingale ;)

Panos,

Yes, it's a 3-manual console. As far as the profit thing goes, I can see where someone who spent hours and hours recording and tempramenting samples deserves some sort of compensation - if not for anything else but to prevent others from profiting off the same work. As for myself, everything I have done so far has been to bring a couple of old consoles back to life. This is a hobby for me. I can't even play organ!!! However, if any of the work I have done to get these consoles working with GrandOrgue is of use to someone in this community, I certainly don't mind sharing.

Thank you for all of your helpful contributions!!!

Hi Guys,

I've thought about this one (free vs. commercial) and can really see support for both schools of thought. My actions so far have proven me part of the 'release for free' camp, but the more samples that I help prepare, them more I realize how much work really goes into making a super sample set... and the more I think that some 'payment' should be made. I personally think the release for free with a Creative Commons license, and then a website with a PayPal donation system is a good idea. Then those who really appreciate the sample set and are able to make a donation for the time spent in creating it can make their donation. Those who (like me!) are just covering their monthly expenses and don't have much cash to spare can use the samples and sing the praises of the sample set on forums like this one.

I've also thought about the 'individual rank' idea, and I like it and I also think that the commercial organ set producers could make some smaller 'sales' by using this model.

Having fun!

You got a point here both of you my friends...it's hard work, I've done it, I know...

I like this web site idea Graham, with the donation, but are there people who donate?
I never met one, at least in Athens....here prevails the...cracking.....

I don't know, time will show, we're in the beggining of a new era I believe

cheers

Hi Panos,

Donationware works for only a section of the population - those that have a good conscience and the ability to make a contribution. I could not make a financial donation to Joseph Basquin for the use of the original Jeuxdorgues2 sample set, so I helped him create a better one, and I work on spreading the news about the sample set and supporting it. There are at least two people that I have introduced the sample set to who have been able to make a donation to Joseph. The 'requested donation' amount needs to be reasonable (so 500 Euros is simply out of the equation!), but the concept seems the best to me.

As you say, time will tell :)

Yes, Graham
as you say, I wanted to give something to Joseph too... that's why I reworked his early jeuxdorgues1 - Oberhausbergen set and make it up to date and better for use with jOrgan310. I'm about to release a new and still better version of it.

Wish I knew some people to introduce Joseph to and donate something to help him do more and better soundbanks !

Cheers

clarinet stop. et al

I can understand the problem with making individual stops available: pipes are voiced to be a part of an ensemble in an organ. Otherwise, you'd just have a collection of solo voices.

On the other hand. my GO collection of about 35 stops was garnered from about five or six different free sets and, wicth some tweeking, sounds amazingly good for free.

As for individual stops, I'm still looking for a clarinet. Free or even at a decent price for a singe stop. And a set of real chimes - not synthesized - would be nice, too.

Hi Bob,

If the samples are taken very closely to source (pipe) and there's no environtment noise and/or reverb, then you can assemble a nice collection of clean stops, make a totaly new organ (with a new odf) for Grand Orgue up to your needs and sound great ! Yes.
With new reverb of course....

Clarinet, still lookin' but real chimes....YES :
Go to Sonus Paradisi and download the Velesovo Organ HW3 free set, It's one of my favourites and has a bonus : a chimes stop !! Not encrypted so you can use it in your set !

Have fun

Hi Matt,

I have a recording of a Clarinet rank that I've almost finished the noise reduction on. Would anyone here volunteer to 'loop and release' it for GrandOrgue. It is from the Lafeyette Theatre Wurlitzer...

I can release some stops from French organs at very small price, but for Hauptwerk 3 only and with only a few samples by octave, not a sample by note, but this suits well many purposes and may be what you need.
Using these French samples with GrandOrgue may be also possible if you are able to set the infinite loop markers of each sample, paste the realease tail at the end of the sample and set the release marker. But this requires a lot of time

I can also release stops for HWK and GO coming from Canadian organs, but a little more expensive as I am not the owner of these samples

I will start with some stops of an organ from Normandie and will post a message when ready

As for individual stops, I'm still looking for a clarinet. Free or even at a decent price for a singe stop.

I use the Cromorne from the Pitea sample set (which is available for free here: http://www.familjenpalo.se/vpo/download ) as the clarinet in the Solo division of the organ that I compiled from different sample sets. It's not exactly the same timbre as a clarinet stop but it's pretty close and it passes. Maybe that will work for you as well?

Hope this helps,
Matt
