    The Jamie Cullum Thread

He's been mentioned a few times in various threads here, so I thought I'd create a thread where we could express our opinions on this young artist, relatively new to the jazz stage. What I like about him is that he mixes jazz with popular music. Not the Britney-Spears-and-such kind of pop though, but something of much higher value.

Here's what Wikipedia has to say about him.

    Some clips from youtube:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKG6VbJH4to
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1SSKe3zxbg

A cover of a popular (so I've heard) song by Rihanna:

And now, let's hear some feedback from my fellow MIMFers.

Nice thread Mat. I did not have much time for him until I heard him play and sing on a Toots Theilman CD. His restraint impressed my. It was so different from his usual TV performances.

    Thanks, Gord.

Hey Teddy, would mind telling me more about this CD? I did a quick google search only to find that Jamie indeed sang One For My Baby with Toots, but that's all. No word on Cullum actually playing the piano. Did I miss something?

Congrats Mat it is good to see others having a go, although I do not particularly go for this type of music I am sure it has a big following and you have made a good job of the thread

Cheers Colin. Glad you all liked the thread.

I listened to four of Jamie's albums so far; liked most of what I heard. I do agree that some of the stuff he does on stage might be cosidered flamboyant as I saw on some clips on youtube. But don't let that discourage you. As Teddy said, he can tone down a bit while playing with such fine musicians as Toots Thielemans.

There was a certain amount of assumption regarding Cullem playing on that CD. I thought it sounded like him, but I have not been able to find a list of musicians. I would be interested to know if anyone has this information.

I have tried at least have a dozen sites and can not find a list of musicians for OFTR apart from Toots. Everyone else is listed as "vocals".

    Hi Mat,

I have the Toots Thielman CD "One more for the Road".

Jamie Cullum sings only "One for my Baby" on Track 5 (He is not the pianist on that track - Kenny Werner is)

He also has 6 Cds on Spotify which I have dotted among - not really my taste and I wouldnt buy any of the CDs.

    Cheers John

Well done John. Of course this means that my opinion of Cullums playing is null and void, but I did enjoy his singing on the album. I will have to try spotify to see if he is as enjoyable, in reined back mode, as I had hoped.

Hey John. Haven't seen you posting in a while, hope you're doing okay.
Thanks for the CD info. Now everything's clear.

Teddy, feel free to share your opinion here after you've listened to Cullum's other albums.

I need to listen to him a bit more, before I can make an opinion.

OK..He will probably never be my favorite performer, but I like him better than I did. I will give him the benefit of the doubt in future, rather than turning him off straight away.

Nice to hear that, Teddy. I'd say he's one of my favorites but I still like Diana better.
