    Personnel lists

Hi, one disadvantage of downloading MP3s is that one rarely if ever gets any personnel lists.

Many discographies are also incomplete, I've been searching for personnel on some Mel Powell albums from mid 1950s with no success so far, the albums I actually have CDs of have personnel information included, not so for Jazz MP3s, although many Classical MP3s do have details.

The same lack of detail also applies to last.fm, not sure about Spotify, I don't use them.
    Cheers MIKE.

Magpie Music is very good on information regarding their albums, if they have it. Might be worth looking them up for a specific album Mike.

Tried them, the only 2 Mel Powell albums they have are ones I have CDs of.

I'm looking for some Jam session tracks from 1954/5 possibly with Buck Clayton among others, and a Carnegie Hall jam session, not sure of the date on that one tho.

Found this one a bit better than most, but still not what I was looking for.
    Cheers MIKE.

Mike did you see gords post about the books he picked up? He could end up as our best friend.

    Hi Mike,
You are probably aware of the following source for personel in mel Powell CDs ie "CD Universe.
    I noted the following:
    "Best things in life"
    "Return of Mel Powell"
    "Plays Eddie Sauter"
    Peggy Lee -"Complete Recordings 1941-47"
"Benny Goodman-Arrangements by Fletcher Henderson/Eddie Sauter""
    "Benny Goodman- Ken Burns Jazz"
    "Essential Buck Clayton"

Spotify often lists personel in individual CDs as does Amazon.
The latter also shows personel on the covers of CDs which can be blown up a bit to show personel lists

    Cheers John

Gord, any chance of some info from your new purchase on the following CD

Dodo Marmarosa, Complete Jazz series 1945-50, (Remastered to CD 27 April 2009) I'd like to know who the blues singer is on the track "Black and Blue" recorded 1947.

If it's any help, the names I can make out on the CD sleeve on Amazon are Lucky thompson, Joe Wallace, Gene Englund, Barney Kessel, Thomas Mandrus and Jackie Mills, plus others not listed, none of those named show any blues vocalising talent on Google/Wiki.

One of my first jazz records was a Marmarosa 78rpm on that dusky blue label, sometime around 1950, I had to wait for father to go out before I dare play it on his prized radiogram.
    Cheers MIKE.

hi mike, this is a hard task you have set me. there is no black and blue listed under marmarosas name, it could be under one of the other musicians, iwill check them out later. i have found the 1945-50 sessions by him and the only vocalists on a few of them are slim gaillard and woody herman. does it sound like either of them? gord

Hi Gord, listed on Amazon MP3 downloads, track 11 on this page

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Jaz...02806&sr=301-4

In the Amazon CD listings (it's a bit of a rarity, priced at £47, only 2 available) it's listed as being Dodo Marmarosa trio.

It's difficult to determine if it's a high male singer or low woman most likely a woman though which is one of the reasons I'm intrigued by it. Almost what I would term a blues shouter, not overly tuneful but "with feeling". Not like any other Dodo piece I've heard.

I hear it most days on last.fm.
