ELP

I was perusing this forum and found several great progressive rock groups mentioned such as Yes and King Crimson. However,I saw no mention made of what I would consider to be one of the most important groups in this "movement"; namely Emerson Lake and Palmer. I doubt that anybody who loves this genre would disagree with my assessment of ELP being a seminal group on the prog rock scene. Please let me know if I have mistakenly missed any references to this supergroup in any of your many postings and threads. White Knight.

There was a poll somewhere and a couple of discussions wherein ELP have appropriately received mentions. I don't disagree with you about their Prog status as I think many would be hard-pressed to argue otherwise.

One of the important things about them was that they were in effect, the first Prog "supergroup" in that all three members were already well known from other ventures. Keith Emerson's skill in composing and improvising were certainly pivotal moments in the groups development too, although I have to stop watching when he starts to abuse and maim his instruments (I've always hated seeing players that do that to any musical instrument as I find it too distressing, not to mention mindlessly violent and generally moronic since it was the instrument that got them the attention in the first place).

Carl Palmer is a powerhouse drummer too, I've always enjoyed his solo spots in ELP and Asia.

Soubasse, I couldn't agree with you more on your ELP observations. although I wasn't aware that Emerson pulled a Pete Townsend/Jimi Hendrix stunt on his instrument, be it moog synthesizer or organ You are spot on re: Carl Palmer's drumming abilities. I was fortunate and privileged enough to catch them in 1970 at Carnegie Hall during their initial American tour and still remember how blown away I was by both the group's talent and inventiveness and the absolute dynamite drumming of Carl Palmer. From that day on, I became a lifelong devotee of this group, only later becoming aware that their roots began in King Crimson and The Nice.
