Well...If you don't LOVE R-K don't come here.

R-K is one of my preferred composers.

He composed 15 marvelous operas, 3 symphonies, a few concertos and some poems like Scheherazade, Russian Easter, Spanish Capriccio...

I have almost all his music. If you want to learn, be welcome, if you want to teach you're more than welcome!

Best regards.

Hallo Martin and welcome to the forums:wave:

Hmmm, a very hard statement for your opening post:rolleyes:
I don't think Rimsky wanted to rule anything, just to create beautiful music !

Also keep in mind that in the Russian tradition (which I love) there are the names of Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Rahmaninov, Prokoviev and Stravinsky that prevent anyone to actually rule !

As far as I reccon, in these forums Admin team rules !

Have fun

He was mainly an opera compsoer as Wagner, Verdi and Puccini.

Rimsky-Korsakov's and Tchaikovsky's operas are the most popular in Russia. I went two times to Russia.

Bye.

Tsar's bride (opera)
Story ot tsar Saltan (opera, Pushkin)
May night (opera, Gogol)
Christmas eve (opera, Gogol)
Pan Voyevoda (opera)
The golden cockerell (Opera, Pushkin)
Mlada (Opera)
The snow Maiden (opera, Serov)

and many others...
R-K was an opera composer as Wagner,Verdi and Puccini...in North America we know his low profile works...The idea here is to make you know the real Rimsky-Korsakov.

I see....

It is frustrating to observe how people know just his most "American promoted works", Scheherazade, Spanish Capricio, Russian Easter, The flight of the bumblebee...BUT This is not the real R-K, he's like Wagner an opera composer! His chamber music is not that good, his symphonies are nice though but his operas are excellent.

Some examples here:

In Russia he still rules...Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov are every year at the Bolshoi several times.

Sincerely,

Martin

Alban Berg. I have to agree, just love Sadko, Mlada and Christmas Eve, such gorgeous scores. I've also heard the Golden Cockerel (in recording only). My national opera company is such a risk taker NOT that they stick to the money making crap: Boheme, Tosca, Aida, Figaro et cetera.

Great surprise!

Indeed many you have mentionned are crap for me too...Not Figaro! I love the two figaros, tired of drama, I enjoy very much Rossini's Barber and Mozart's wedding...Many R-K are comedies too...

Christmas eve (R-K) and Oprichnik (Tchaikovsky) are awesome. I have both on DVD, The Christmas eve is a weird version (non commercial in English) but better than nothing.

I'd love to see them here! But Montreal is the crappest place for opera...Just the very well known all the time...Why? Easy, people have no knowledge and they don't want to take any risk. In Buenos Aires where I am from, they have always a 25% of risky operas...
The golden cockerel is awesome...But you can buy many R-K operas on DVD...and if you're not very rich (Neither am I) go to

http://premiereopera.com/search.aspx?find=rimsky-korsakov+dvd&log=false&category=2

I preferred to buy commercial because of the subtitles...and to be honest, R-K are too important for me! amazon.com is not SO expensive. If you need suggestions about the versions, do not hesitate...It will be a real pleasure.

Cherevichki (Tchaikovsky) was last year ate the Covent Garden...At the Met they passed Snegurotchka I can't say when...

About Alla Scala...their reputation is to be safe...
