• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Hi!

Does anyone here know if it's possible to get Duruflé's complete organ works sheet music, all collected in one book? If not, are there any significant differences between different editions on his music?

There are several sources for the music of Duruflé. The Durand edition is the most common and probably the most accurate, imho.

This site, lists works of Duruflé that are available.

Duruflé's music will not become public domain until well after 2156, if then at all.

2156! That's a bit of an overkill, don't you think? ;) And yes, I meant to purchase it. The Choral varié sur le theme de Veni Creator is giving me hell right now, so maybe I'll let the other pieces wait a little first... but in a couple of years, definitely! :D Anyone else here played any Duruflé work? What are your favourite organ works by him? :)

Oops  my error ... should have read 2056 (70 years after he passed on).

I never attempted to learn any of Duruflé's works ... they were most likely on my "pieces to learn" list provided by my organ teacher some 45 years ago.

My favorite work (non organ) is probably his Requiem No 9.

It's next to impossible for me to exclude his Requiem from any favourites list - of any sort of music - as it's such a superlative work. The 1947 version is as much an organ piece as any other, have played it about half a dozen times, very demanding but highly rewarding. (The version with organ + chamber orch is marginally easier!).
Favourite solo pieces include the Suite (especially the Toccata) and the Prelude et Fugue sur le nom d'ALAIN. Marvelously accessible composer was Durufle.

I agree about the Requiem - though I do not know it very well I am fully aware of its greatness.
Ah yes, the great toccata! One of my all time favourites as well... Maybe next project, after tying up all the loose ends of all the half-finished pieces I have now... Have you played it? Any advice on its difficulties?
Admittedly, piano is my main instrument, am attempting the concert pianist road, but I love playing the organ as well so I'll keep it warm. For that reason the manual parts of organ works are not very much of a problem... But the pedal part is always in the way xP Finally I'm starting to manage the coordination, but ol'Maurice always seems to find me some new problems...
Anyway, and now I'm drifting a little bit away from the Duruflé subject, could you please suggest a couple of nice intermediate-advanced (not afraid of challenges) organ works? Preferably romantic and 20th century. I know very few organ pieces from that time...

EDIT: started a new thread about this.
