• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

organists have a bad character

I have great admiration for anyone who can play these instruments. Just looking at all the pedals, stops and multiple keyboards scares the living daylights out of me. Well done to all of you who have mastered the organ and please keep entertaining us.

Teddy, you COULD indeed play the organ. The thing is, you might not quite achieve the level of Dame Gillian Weir, but so long as the piece you CAN play well is good, that's all that matters ... food for thought.

Ahm, where did Dame Gillian Weir come from? I seem to know the name.

Scared me too my first day seated at this 3 manual console in my organ teachers home. I was petrified ... but the mannerism in which my organ teacher described all the 'workings' gave me the confidence to continue. And am I ever glad I did. :)

teddy, I'll never 'master' the organ ... for me, it can't be done ... there will always be something new that I discover along the way that will keep me returning for more.

Bottom line, as David mentions above, you could do what we do ... it's not that difficult ... what it does take is perseverance and tons of practicing.

I hink in my case Lars it would be more like tons of persperation. It has taken my years with the guitar just to play at a very basic level. To take up a new instrument at the moment would require more than I could give it. There is very little room in my cottage so many a keyboard would find a home here, rovided I could stand it in a corner when not in use. Add to that my inability to read music, unless I am transcribing it into my own notation, and I would have problems. Time, or lack of it is another major factor.. No, for the moment at least I will have to be satisfied with listening to you guys. It is certainly a pleasurable experience.

teddy ( I was going to make an organ joke here but thought it would not survive the regulators)

Well someone has to say it teddy, you are not musically adept it would obviously be a waste of the the few years that you have left wasting time on something that is completely beyond you capabilities, face the truth man you are a lost cause, hmmmmm

Indeed, she was born in your neck of the woods but has spent a fair bit of time in the UK (losing her native accent among other things :D :D ). Dame Gillian is well up there with the likes of Marie-Claire Alain when it comes to the world's foremost famous formidable female organists (sorry for the alliterations). I had the immense privilege of performing for her at a workshop on Messiaen. I learned what felt like two years worth of lessons from her in just 1 hour!

And having just spent the last few minutes typing that, I have thought to myself "Hmm, maybe Colin was exercising his dry wit in enquiring after Dame Gillian and already knows all about her, in which case, I'll look like a git. Ah well, nothing new there" ;)
