Advice on buying the right piano!!

Hello!
I've recently started taking piano lessons and I'm doing very well at it And now I want to buy a piano. At least I used to. I've looked it up on the internet and I've seen those electric pianos that seem pretty cool. I've even found a used one for a reasonable price. But I have also found pianos for reasonable price... Now I don't really know what I want anymore :P Any advice? Which is better and why? What would you choose?

Good question, emily. The answer depends entirely where you live in my mind. If you live in an apartment with neighbours above and below, a digital piano (full keyboard) and headphones is a must, especially if you get the urge to play at 3am. Nothing, however, beats the feel of an acoustic piano...they do need tuning and maintenance (which the digitals don't). Does this help? I also own a Yamaha, very happy with it.

I do live in an apartment and I will be living here for the next four years since I'm a student. I don't think I'll have any urges to play that late at night - afterall I am a morning person As for the tuning and maintenance it's not really a problem since my professor can recommend me some people... The thing is that I really like both and can't decide which one is for me. I've got keyboards which I use for practice but after playing at my professor's piano I realized that keyboards are so dumb :P
So you've got Yamaha? Would you trade it for a piano :P?

No, because I can't plug a piano into my USB MIDI interface and work on my computer notation projects ...

There are pros and cons to both acoustic and digital pianos.

David mentions about using a digital for your apartment use, and that certainly makes lots of sense. So, when using the digital, one is really practicing notes, the repetition of playing certain sequences in an established order. On the acoustic piano, you can add technique to the mix when practicing ... there are few digitals that can replicate the 'feel' of the acoustic piano.

The best scenario would to have both at home ... or perhaps the digital at home and then use the practice rooms at the university/school at other times. I have an acoustic piano at home ... I too, like David had, wished I also had a digital with USB interface for my composing projects.

Lars, digital with headphones means you don't disturb anyone, and easy to move. Acoustic means removalist truck each time you move (unless mother and father are happy to have a huge decoration in their living room).

Our National Music Examination body (AMEB) has a "preferred list" when it comes to digital pianos, as it does with domestic organs (at least two manuals and so forth, well d'uh!).

You wrote that you are a student - Have you made up a budget for purchase and maintenance of an acoustic piano? Maybe buying a musical instrument is like buying an appliance(toaster, microwave, food processor) for you. Heaven forfend if the instrument is an appliance purchase.

Of course, I know of students where money was no problem at all(Bosendorfer in their Penthouse Suite).

Bottom line: There are lots of choices - Do your homework first before buying.

But that's why I left a message here in the first place.Maintenance and money are not a problem because I've already found both digital and acuostic piano that are not expensive (they're used but good as new). And no, buying an instrument is certainly not like buying a house appliance for me and that's why I need advice... I am a student and here in Belgrade (where I live currently) that means that i no longer live with my parents but alone in a flat. And whether I buy a digital or an acuostic piano it would probably be in one place a.k.a. I wouldn't be moving it any time soon...
