Hi Gord. I must say that Sun Ra's version is--if nothing else--"different", to say the least. To me, parts of it sounded like someone was playing a kazoo instead of the sax. It had the sound of the old Ebbets Field in Brooklyn when the fans would start playing in their "band"{I've forgotten the quaint name which they used for their group}. I'm also not much for vocals in my jazz, unless it's Satchmo or Billie Holiday. So overall, I would rate this piece a 6/10 for its uniqueness.
What think you of this version of the same piece?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-DfC...eature=related

Gord, great assessments indeed. Should you or I post the next song for review, or wait for another member to do so?

this is a video that demonstrates only why Sun ra was such a controversial musician. In his music one can find useless and ridicolous noise like this but also things of great beauty (either in traditional or experimental style). The fact that he recorded so many albums does not help to understand.
Just an example of what i mean:

hi escher,i rate the sun ra 9 out of 10,it was excellant. i am actually a fan of sun ra,at times he is performs beautiful and intense music. my remarks and video aimed at colin were made tongue in cheek, because colin has a great sense of humour, a found the most ridiculous piece of sun ra i could find, to get a laugh out of him. ifigured he would enjoy it, but not like it. now i need somebody to rate the above video. it is anita o day at newport.gord

Gord, although this genre of jazz is not my particular "cup of tea" {once again, please excuse the pun}, Anita's obvious joy at performing in this venue and her phrasings and tempo {i?} changes really carried the day {sorry!} for me. I just wish they had shown the drummer during her scat singing in "Tea For Two". Overall, a great "snapshot" as it were of an America long gone indeed. I'd give it an 8/10.
Now, to sample a different--though no less ardent--form of passion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvmJHprG_Fg

You're spot on Gord - you can soon get lost keeping up with this thread but isn't that great. Just shows how good it is.
I just missed 2 days and I'm going to work hard to catch up (see separate posts)

    Cheers John

Right Gord getting back to your point - I dont think we should go for a "wait your turn process". It would be a shame to slow things down at the cost of reduced interest.

    Cheers John
