Rating The Jazz Piece Above Me

gord, wonderful piece with Shorter really "laying out" with his sax; at times it almost sounded like a trumpet in spots! I had never heard Wynton Kelly's playing before. He too was excellent, reminding me a bit of Bobby Timmons. And of course, the drumming of Philly Joe is always on point. 10/10.
mat, I basically would agree with gord's overall assessment of your link; though a little too"churchy" for my taste, the delicacy of the sax fusion with the chanting sort of won me over by the end of this work. For me then, it's an 8/10.

I've always liked Mitchell and am less familiar with Turrentine. This piece sounds as if it was originally meant for a big band type of setting. I must say that I still cannot acclimate myself to an organ being part of jazz {I have the same bias against guitar--be it acoustic or electric--"fitting in" with the jazz genre}. So, I'd have to give this a 6.5/10. Keeping what I said in mind, my next offering would have been much more effective--IMHO, of course--sans Grant Green and his electric guitar. Oh well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-s_13iPg6DY&feature=related

Surprisingly, I quite liked Montgomery's playing (7/10) but not as much as One o'clock jump posted by Gord. It gets 8.5/10. Loved the organ solo and comping. I've got a couple of Shirley Scott albums; obviously need to give them another listen. Steve, you sure you don't like Hammond? I could send you a few links if you'd like. Maybe you'll change your mind. Let me know via PM.

I think this pianist hasn't been mentioned yet

Hi, Mat. You are so right about Michael Petrucciani! I've heard him do a couple of sets with Wayne Shorter and he really is tremendous. Unfortunately, I do believe he might have passed recently. In spite of his being crippled, he produced great music! 10/10 on "Looking Up."
As to your other query, 2 instruments I cannot seem to integrate with jazz are the guitar {acoustic or electric} and the organ. I like them well enough though in rock, progressive rock and classical {for the organ, that is.}

gord, you just introduced me to two more jazz musicians I'd never even heard of--let alone heard--until tonight. Ray Bryant and Vic Dickerson are both magnificent. I'm sorry to hear that Mr. Bryant has passed.
In spite of the guitar being present on "Russian Lullaby", overall, I found the piece to be very melodic and swinging. I even like this rendition of the work better than I do Coltrane's treatment of it, and that's saying a lot! I give it a 9/10.
Now, how about some beautiful , haunting Shorter and Tyner: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nd46M0PYpj4

CD, a tremendous rendition by our man. I just listened earlier today to the Thelonious Monk Quartet with Trane performing this piece {which Monk wrote, after all}, and Tyner's interpretation of it is so alive and exciting. 10/10 from me. Now try this on for size: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Km8-ztez3SA&playnext=1&list=PL5F8CB1FE19E6BB83

Hey Steve-O, Thats a 10+/10!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ya know, our forum member Panos(ghekorg) is a McCoy-fan also, plus he also plays piano in almost a McCoy-like fashion.

More later...

Very nice intonation on the sax, very "clean" sounding. Not much in the way of theme development. This--at least to my taste--is very, very lite jazz, w/o any calories or complications. It doesn't really challenge in any way, but I guess this style isn't supposed to anyway. For what it wished to accomplish--"easy listening"--I'd give it a 10/10, but for my own preference--including that bloody guitar again!--a 4.5/10. Now for something a little more to my liking, and I hope yours as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyLY7FSd3WA

^^ It's not my cup of tea, I'm afraid. Plus, I don't really like clarinet in jazz so 6/10.

Here's a recording by a Polish pianist, B3 organist and composer.

No offense meant, but this music kind of reminds me of when I was 14 years old--which I was in 1965--and waiting to watch "Batman" with Adam West. To me, it's just too schmaltzy for jazz--at least the kind of jazz that I like. Each instrument is taking its turn, but--IMHO--is really doing nothing to drive or propel the theme to a different level. There's no challenge or excitement for me in listening; I know where's it's going and how it's going to get there. Again, for a tv show that's alright but when I listen to jazz or any other genre of music, I'd like some surprises and twists, just to keep it interesting. 4/10.
Contrast that with this rendition of a samba based theme by a master musician at work with his quintet; notice how at nearly the end of this piece Silver throws in a beautiful and haunting wrinkle. For me, this work represents a thing of jazz beauty, especially the last 40 seconds or so:

Sorry Gord, another not impressed here, 5/10, one of the experiments that didn't do it for me, say wrong direction?

Not listened to much last couple of days, been working on some classical pieces, playing with the virtual pipe organ.
