Rating The Jazz Piece Above Me

Gord, that's an absolutely beautifully played and evocative piece. I love the way the piano changes the tempo in certain parts of the song. The fact that Art Blakey, Lee Morgan and Sonny Clark {the aforementioned pianist} doesn't hurt either. The tenor sax, Brooks, is " most excellent" as well. Thanks for turning me on to yet another musician of whom I had never heard before. Definitely a 10/10.

Sorry, Mat, I tried to get the Robbie Williams link but it kept freezing up on me and wouldn't play straight through!

Seriously? Oh well, i don't want to discuss different tastes, but i think that Blue Serge is one of the best pieces recorded by Ellington...
The piece itself is just fine. I just don't like the version you posted. I much prefer this one.

That's strange, Steve. It worked fine for me. Anyway, you can try downloading it from here.

Ok, Mat, I finally was able to download that link. I never heard of either of these 2 guys before, so I don't know what else they've done in the past musically. They are definitely very talented, handsome and entertaining. However, I don't view this as jazz per se; as far as their enthusiasm and stage presence, they definitely garner a 10/10.

Glad you liked it, Steve. I'm surprised you've never heard of Robbie Williams, though. I assumed he's much more famous in the US and the UK than here. He generally sticks to rock and pop, thus hearing him sing what I posted here (which, for me, without question is jazz) was a very nice change.

Now, this is not pure jazz, but it definitely deserves to be posted here:

How about some European jazz for a change of pace. IMHO, it simply doesn't get much better than this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-xQWqqTKEo. I especially love the way in which this piece allows the bassist and drummer to really lay out and showcase their remarkable skills on their respective instruments.

steve, dont know who these guys are with jordan, but that trumpet sounds a lot like lee morgan to me, the trombone could be curtis fuller, the altosax i have no idea, and that piano who ever he is plays great piano. gord

Gord, quite honestly, I liked the original rendition of this song better {done by Monk and Trane and Monk} than this version. I could not for the life of me pick up any of the components of its original theme in this version. It just seemed kind of aimless--and endless--to me. I'll give it a 6/10 for effort, though.
