hi steve, i have to disagree, dexter and mance are both superb. of course the coltrane and monk version is superior, but to call dex and mance aimless seems to me strng words for what i would call a great performance. now, will you rate this one i call this the most unusual coltrane the piano is the way out cecil taylor. gord

@Gord, I am in full agreement with you on the Coltrane piece; Dorham on trumpet and Taylor tickling the keys were just awesome. They all came together wonderfully as a unit. 10/10
Re your other comment, I don't doubt that Dexter Gordon and Junior Mance are/were superb musicians. Their version of "Blue Monk" just didn't resonate with me the way that Trane's did, that's all. Maybe the adjective I used--aimless--is a little harsh, so I'll "upgrade" it to meandering. Again, remember, only IMHO. No hard feelings, eh?
Anyway, try this very short piece by one of my favorite pianists whom I always seem to forget when I'm posting these links: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKoJNsq3RQo&feature=related

Steve, one can never go wrong with Chick Corea. That's a well-deserved 10/10. Should you have any more interesting links on him, do not hesitate to share them with me.

This piece comes from The Russia House movie with Connery and Pfeiffer. It features Branford Marsalis on soprano sax (one of the best sopranists, IMHO), Michael Lang on piano and John Patitucci on bass. Teddy, you might wanna give this one a listen.

You can rate it as well, Steve. I just thought Teddy could like it because we both have a fondness for soprano saxophne.
As for your link - not the first time I've heard it as I happen to have the album it comes from as well. Nice, but not as good as the previous one you posted - 8/10.

So, to stay on topic - how would you rate this?

Re "Russia House", its seamless flow and beautiful sax playing from Marsalis garners it a 10/10 in my book.

Hey Gord. I liked the comment under the first Bill Clinton clip - "I did not have sax with this woman". LOL.

RE Gets/Johnson duo - great piece of music, very well-played. I rate it a solid 8/10. I'd prefer though if a ballad like My Funny Valentine remained a ballad.

Now, I'm very eager to hear your opinion on this one. I stumbled upon this pianist by chance, got one of his album, which I liked very much. As to the piece I'm posting - I just loved the harmony he used over the last bars.

Gord, that's one perfect jazz piece. It grabbed me from its opening notes and held me for the whole time. Each sax player brought his own distinctive take to the work, and were fantastic. They were focused and yet lyrical at the same time. Gene Casey on piano and Roy Haynes on drums only made it that much better. Definitely 10/10. And again, I want to personally thank you for exposing me to musicians whom I had never heard playing before! Now, how about a classic from Miles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t64Y6e2Zwa0&feature=related

here is miles with some of the biggest names in jazz. this is a jam session, and at times a bit ragged, but i still find it interesting because it is miles with some of my favorite musicians. gord

Gord, that is simply fantastic! I never knew that Monk and Davis played together like that at Newport; Gerry Mulligan was "off the hook" as well. 10/10. Now here's someone that our good friend Teddy had recommended, and was he ever right! It's such an unmitigated tragedy that this extremely gifted and sensitive musician was taken from us so young: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ij590_buAQ&feature=related

steve, reguarding miles and monk, miles always seemed to have some issues with monk.below is the famous session from 1954. you will notice that monk sits out while miles is soloing. i believe there was lots of arguements during this recording session, but it still turned out great. gord

Gord, that is flawless jazz! The presence of Milt Jackson's vibraphone added a whole other dimension for me, and Monk's minor chord progressions are evident even way back in 1954 {I was 3 years old}. 10/10
I'm sorry if I've already posted this piece by Lee Morgan; I hope you enjoy it as much as I do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgDQxNiSKSM

what we have here is coltrane and two powerful and robust baritone saxes, pepper adams and cecil payne.you would think that coltrane would be over whelmed by the pair. wrong nobody over powers coltrane, infact they inspire him. that rhythm section mal waldron, doug watkins and art taylor. a great album, one of my favorites.gord
