hi steve, i have to disagree, dexter and mance are both superb. of course the coltrane and monk version is superior, but to call dex and mance aimless seems to me strng words for what i would call a great performance. now, will you rate this one i call this the most unusual coltrane the piano is the way out cecil taylor. gord

@Gord, I am in full agreement with you on the Coltrane piece; Dorham on trumpet and Taylor tickling the keys were just awesome. They all came together wonderfully as a unit. 10/10
Re your other comment, I don't doubt that Dexter Gordon and Junior Mance are/were superb musicians. Their version of "Blue Monk" just didn't resonate with me the way that Trane's did, that's all. Maybe the adjective I used--aimless--is a little harsh, so I'll "upgrade" it to meandering. Again, remember, only IMHO. No hard feelings, eh?
Anyway, try this very short piece by one of my favorite pianists whom I always seem to forget when I'm posting these links: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKoJN...eature=related
Whatever floats your boat May your reach always exceed your grasp Ciao for now, Steve

Steve, one can never go wrong with Chick Corea. That's a well-deserved 10/10. Should you have any more interesting links on him, do not hesitate to share them with me.

This piece comes from The Russia House movie with Connery and Pfeiffer. It features Branford Marsalis on soprano sax (one of the best sopranists, IMHO), Michael Lang on piano and John Patitucci on bass. Teddy, you might wanna give this one a listen.

You can rate it as well, Steve. I just thought Teddy could like it because we both have a fondness for soprano saxophne.
As for your link - not the first time I've heard it as I happen to have the album it comes from as well. Nice, but not as good as the previous one you posted - 8/10.

So, to stay on topic - how would you rate this?

I would give that a solid 8.5/10; I just thought it was a tad too long. I really liked the bass player. The drummer was pretty good too. Here's a slightly shorter piece from our man: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Dusd...eature=related

Re "Russia House", its seamless flow and beautiful sax playing from Marsalis garners it a 10/10 in my book.

Hey Gord. I liked the comment under the first Bill Clinton clip - "I did not have sax with this woman". LOL.

RE Gets/Johnson duo - great piece of music, very well-played. I rate it a solid 8/10. I'd prefer though if a ballad like My Funny Valentine remained a ballad.

Now, I'm very eager to hear your opinion on this one. I stumbled upon this pianist by chance, got one of his album, which I liked very much. As to the piece I'm posting - I just loved the harmony he used over the last bars.

Gord, that's one perfect jazz piece. It grabbed me from its opening notes and held me for the whole time. Each sax player brought his own distinctive take to the work, and were fantastic. They were focused and yet lyrical at the same time. Gene Casey on piano and Roy Haynes on drums only made it that much better. Definitely 10/10. And again, I want to personally thank you for exposing me to musicians whom I had never heard playing before! Now, how about a classic from Miles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t64Y6...eature=related
