Linux music software

I've recently been experimenting with Linux on my computer--trying out different versions. . .There is a ton of software out there for Linux, but it is difficult to know where to look for things. Does anyone know of good music software--specifically music notation software and recording/editing software? I'm looking for software that would allow professional quality music work, both in notation and in recording/editing (something that might compare with Sibelius and Soundforge.) Can anyone make any recommendations, and perhaps compare some Linux programs with corresponding Windows software?

Thanks!

Well... I haven't used Linux much myself... why would you want to use it for music? Don't the programs for PC or Mac suit your needs?
I found this site with music software: http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/linux/ - The Lillypond has been mentioned before, but I think it's more of a programming language with a note-output rather than a "real" notationsoftware.
If you find something please tell us about it.

That's a very interesting page of information! This will be useful for a lot of experimenting! Thanks

I've been experimenting with Linux off and on now for about 5 years. I really would like to make the switch over for a number of reasons. For one thing, Linux doesn't need to have the hard drive defragmented because it keeps the files in order. It doesn't get slow, sloppy and messy like Windows does over a period of time. It's very inexpensive and much of the software is Open Source, which means it's basically free. And I have always had problems with the ethics of MS. Plus, I'm just generally curious about these things.

I'll let you know if I find something really interesting!
