I'm not a 3D artist by trade..

..but since you have a board for these things here, I thought I might show some of my small pieces (for the first time officially). I'm well aware that I'm not on the level of certain other 3D artists here, but here we go anyway:


The day before chistmas - Quite appropriate now. I made this for my grandmother as a christmas gift some years ago. Made with 3D Studio MAX and Photoshop.



The last resort - This one was for a website, and the houses should've functioned as links, but I got tired of the idea pretty soon, so that image is basically the remains of what should've been a cosy website and community. Made with Bryce 3D, 3D Studio MAX and photoshop.

The Day Before Christmas is great. I think wood presents endless possibilities for visual, sculptural and 3D artistic projects.
A calendar I have at work has a photo of a duck standing on a log sticking out of the water on a sunny day. The log is wet at the water line and dry at its upper end. The old wood reveals an array of color and texture which changes from light to shadow and, especially interesting, from wet to dry areas.

I have always been wondering how people make these beautiful computer drawings. Does it demand alot of atistic talent or is most of it made via programming?
I think art works like these are very interesting and I would like to know a little bit more about the process of making them.
How much time did you spend creating those two pictures???

Well, I dont think it would be all fair to call it programming, and I say this as a programmer with a good handfull of small Flash games behind me. Think of it as a sequencer: You take a sound, modify it, adjust it, apply filters, place it, render it and then you do it all again untill you're satisfied. It's exactly the same in 3D art: You pick a geometric shape (instead of a sound), then you modify it, adjust it, apply filters and place it where you want it, then you render it and do it all again untill you're satisfied.

It is actually quite the same as to ask if it takes talent to compose a piece of music with a sequencer, or if it's all programming :-)

And by the way, a large portion of "The last resort" is handdrawn with a tablet (the houses, stuff and the palmtrees), and I personally always correct 3D errors with this device when I'm through rendering.

I don't remember exactly, but I think that I must have spent 15-35 hours on "the day before christmas", and about the same on "the last resort" (over several days).
In "the day before christmas" I used a feature called volume lights, and that increase the workload on the computer by far, a single rendering of these lights can take up to an hour, and only then can you see if there's any errors. Patience and/or a good CPU/GPU is often the keywords when you work with 3D graphics.

Very nice pictures , especially the first one, I bet your were her favourite grandson when you gave it to her . No seriously, I would love to be able to make pictures like that, but I´m afraid I don´t have the patience it requires and of course there is the lack of talent (just look at my Bøhmanden picture )

I like both of them. The first picture somehow makes me think of the Christmas Song (the one that begins "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire... ") in minor key.

The second one makes me think of something light and bouncy, like Music Box Dancer, only with the left hand dropped an octave to create a slightly fuller sound to represent the ocean surrounding the island.

I'm sorry for the late reply, but I can say that there's little doubt in my mind that you're a natural born musician when you apply music to graphics like that *S*

I actually composed a reggae/carribean theme loop for the The Last Resort, as it was due to become an animated flash site, but I never really used it as such. The steel drums was just wave files, and it became too obvoius that they were merely pitched from C.

Anyway, I'm glad you liked them!
