• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Ugly or not ugly ?

Hello
An organist asked me forr this a variation on "Ode à la joie", but I have not the feeling because I do not like very much Beethoven, I prefer baroque music. Personally I am not satisfied with my work and find it ugly. Do you agree? Should I put all these notes in the trash or is someone interested anyway?

Musicalis,

I do not agree - I like it very much. It most certainly is not ugly, and to my ears it sounds very Musicalis, and not Beethoven. :)

Jean-Paul... Excellent job..Great developement of the theme as well as variations thereof.. I enjoyed it very much.. Sounds like it would take alittle work to play it however. Make a great concert/recital piece and is not for the adverage organist I think... Sounds like a 3-4 manual organ or one with alot of pistons needed to perform. I like your registration for this piece also.... Definately a great addition to your many well written compositions. DO NOT TRASH IT !!!!!!if you feel you must as is your right..email me a copy first..... Thanks. Bill

Hi J-Paul,

For a man who does "not like very much Beethoven", this work is a great "Ode to Joy" and I think Ol' Ludwig would be proud of the work you have done with his original theme.

Well done ... and although not for the faint of heart performer, it does have its place as part of your great contributions to organ music.

Jean-Paul...I very much enjoyed listening to your variations. I agree that it would make an excellent recital piece or perhaps to be played at the conclusion of a service. It should definetly NOT be trashed but made available to those who would wish to have a copy.

Thanks to all of you for the messages.

Here is a link to the score. Included all informations about the registration I use.
You will see I use 8 general preset combinations and play only on Great. If you play also on Swell you can use less presets.
The pedal part is hard but I was asked a difficult pedal part.
The organ is not a great organ, it is Sancta Magdalena. I have recorded the piece with the free edition of Haupwerk-4 so even if it sounds great the polyphony is under 256 notes.
I do not use special couplers, only Sw/Gr, Gr/P and Sw/P.
Memory requirement of the sample set is <1.1 Gb.

Really enjoyed that Jean Paul, as I expected. Please keep doing what you do so well

Thanks for the PDF file..I enjoyed listening again while following the pdf file.yes that pedal part is far harder than it sounded..perhaps needs a stronger registration at times.
