    Unhandled Exception error

    Unhandled Exception error

Hi, I'm trying to install the OKI colour correction utility, works fine on one (almost identical) PC but the on the other PC installation crashes with the error message

    "Unhandled exception

    Error No 0x80040708

    Description (0x80004005) Unspecified error"

Any ideas what might be causing this?

PCs are both Gateway dual core 2.8GHz, one has 3Gb RAM the other 4Gb, both running XP media centre edition with SP3

I've tried doing the install after a reboot with hardly anything else open, the same copy of the installation files used on both machines. I've downloaded updated files from OKI and also contacted their support dept, so far not much success.

Annoying because the PC it runs OK on is the one I use almost exclusively for music applications, not images and general use.
    Cheers MIKE.

    Mike,

I think it's an "access" thing ... Some applications look for "permission" to install the application, with permission usually being granted by the administrator account of your PC.

I had to create an Administrator account on my Windows 7 machine to install certain programs recently.

It could also be a "registry" issue where something is blocking the "registry" from being altered.

After an extended Googling session it could be registry, but all the registry fix apps want $$$ and then may not fix the problem, another worrying factor, the InstallShield files on the problem PC are not visible even after removibf the "Hidden" tag. (So I looked at the InstallShield site $1499 for the licence! but I suspect that is for the software developers)
    Cheers MIKE.

Yah, I know about the pricey registry apps ... too pricey for what they do, imo.

Another possibility: maybe a "dll" file wasn't installed properly during the install ... sometimes I have to do a un-uninstall and a fresh re-install on some apps. There is lots of data being imported and handled during an install - those little "dll" files can wreak havok on a program if one is missing.

Anyone tried Advanced System Restore? Seems to keep my machine up to scratch.

    And it is free

Lars, it's actually InstallShield that appears to be crashing, it gets as far as asking me what language, then hangs.

I'll have a look for that Teddy.
    Cheers MIKE.

Mike, just throwing out ideas as I know you are a computer savvy person. InstallShield crashing ... that's a first - most strange.

Debatable if it's crashing or just hanging, I tried Teddy's suggested Advanced System thing, no change in the problem though. I feel a format C:\ coming on.

Might try running the colour correction from the other PC see if the correction holds when changing back to the other PC. Suppose that depends if it's held in the printer or on the PC! I'll bet that fella Murphy puts his law in!
    Cheers MIKE.

Another thought just occurred to me Mike ...

Are you installing from a CD or a saved executable file? Some installs are able to detect if the software has been previously installed, meaning it can only be used on one machine at a time, unless it is removed from the other machine. I don't know how they are able to detect this, but it could be something, maybe.

If the two machines are inter-connected via router or wirelessly, they could be 'talking to each other' on this issue ...

Downloaded .exe. Doubt if there's any problem of previous installation being a problem on a networked printer, plus its an update on the original CD version which came with the printer (which got mixed up with step-daughter's CDs and is now prob in Manchester, and she hasn't even sent me a new email address or phone number!)
    Cheers MIKE.
