Some times when I click onto thread link from emails I seem to land up anywhere up to 5-6-7 pages back from last page whilst easy to remedy I wonder what is going on?

You are being returned to your first "unread" message of that thread ... in other words, the forum software "knows" which parts of what threads you have read or not read.
