Advice on a Linux Package for GO

Hi - Having never used Linux could anyone suggest a version on which I would be able to use GO without too much brain bending. I have only used Windows to-date but it seems the majority of GO users are Linux based and I would like to give it a go.

Look at the README file in the sources.

GO includes packaging information for Debian/Ubuntu and OpenSuSE. [Fedora would need small spec file changes, because the package names of the build requirements are different].

I started with OpenSuse in early spring 2007 and later switched to Ubuntu, which I'm almoast exclusively using nowadays since it's very easy to use and if (when) a problem surfaces it's easy to find help and advice since lots of other users most likely already have experienced the same issue.

That said, I did try Puppy Linux some time ago and was very impressed with the performance of that small distro. Especially useful for a low spec computer. With more modern stuff I'd still go with Ubuntu (as I presently do!) even though the new Unity desktop environment is a bit unstable, but it's easy to switch to another. Hopefully the 12.04 LTS version will have fixed most of the issues with Unity.

The main advantages with using Linux are that development is very easy (provided you learn very basic command line operation) and that the system is much more stable than I ever remember Windows to be. Another benefit is that you can customize Linux to whatever need you have, but the drawback is that you'll have to learn more to be able to do that...

If you want a quick and easy introduction to Linux I'd recommend trying Ubuntu. Live CD usage (even from USB instead of CD) is possible but perfomance much slower than when installed.

Building GO on Linux is easy, but if you'd prefer to have recent builds ready to use many of us can probably easily provide you with it.

Thanks very much for your advice. I did have a look at both OpenSuse and Ubuntu based on the builds in the previous reply and decided on the latter purely on the basis of the distro size. I will only be using Linux for GO to start with, as I have a large investment in Windows built up over some years.
I note you mention that V11.10 is a little unstable - I did look through the forum and noted that there were a number of issues which I hope won't give me any grief. I need to check on drivers for my soundcards now and see how I get on. I will still try the windows versions when available though.

Dear Lars, I used long time Suse, but sound was at this time the poor elder of Suse (till Suse 11.0) And this is so biiiiig. I want to have a try at Puppy, anyway I ahve a free partition of 512MB. Is there anything to considere before installing Puppy (only for GO, in fact)?
