Well done - I like this a lot. It has a broad scope which is interesting and a lot of detail which is captivating.
The little splashes of color in the darker regions are fun.
I do not know anything about CG but I wonder if there is a "wind" effect that could move across this from left to right (or opposite). What would it do to push some of the more vapor like colors across the scene?

has to be done manual.. but not neccesarily a bad idea.. I can give it a try..

I gave a good friend of mine the picture, so he as well could be playing around with, combining it with some simple forms made in illustrators. It will be interesting to see what he will come up with.
