• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

New free sampleset for GrandOrgue!

L.Palo

New member
Hi!

Together with Graham and Panos I've created a new sampleset for the latest development version of GrandOrgue. It's a 3 manual + pedal instrument with 35 stops as well as lots of couplers. The original instrument resides in Piteå School of Music, Sweden.

Thanks to the recent developments of GO, we can now also correctly simulate the "no limits" combination system! As such, the audio files are still in the 16 bit 44.1 kHz quality (which means they will be playable with earlier GO versions) but the GUI shows (most of) the new capabilities of GO and requires the latest development version which you'll find on Sourceforge!

Here's a screenshot of the main organ panel (there's also two larger stopjamb panels as well as a "large text" stop control panel).
PiteaGUI.jpg

You'll find the file (PiteaMHS.rar) on my download page: http://www.familjenpalo.se/vpo/download. I hope you'll enjoy the set and do feel free to come with feedback, questions or suggestions.

Kind regards

Lars P

The instrument is very nice. I think recordings are quite successful, especially the reeds sound beautiful.
I've been unaware of some of the new GO features, like custom graphics and panel view. I hope that the new file format is documented somewhere outside GO source... Unlike the original one :)
I suppose the set required huge work (taking over one year to complete), which isn't obvious while playing the instrument. You must have had a great motivation.

Hi Krzysztof,

Indeed three people involved for almost 14 months for this set :)
It is my main organ. I love it.

There is a Help file which is very informative in the new GO v0305_831. Very well written.
I've made a pdf out of this, for those interested printing and like straight "paper" read. PM me if you need it.

Try the alternative temperaments !! They work beautifully with Pitea (menu>Audio).
Careful on overall organ level, can break speakers !! :-D
Also you can load the set in 24/48000 and go higher in quality if you like.

Pitea is kinda neutral but has these bright, typical Scandinavian Mixtures. Reeds too, yes, the BV Oboe 8' is one of my favourites , as is Flauto d' amore 8'.
Gamba / celesta is another fine sounding combination.

Also for those who want more reverb, Pitea behaves excellently, using the two main routes : Jack 1.9.8 for windows and/or ReaRouteAsio in Reaper 4.

Glad you liked and many thanks for the positive feedback.

Best

Hi!

Yes it took us quite some time to finish this sampleset! But remember that we do this on our spare time and not for a living (that's also one of the reasons that we share this with the rest of the world for free). Also in some cases we had to wait a little for the GrandOrgue development to progress before we could do what we wanted.

Nevertheless, I think this sampleset exceed our expectations that we had from the start with great margin! The progress that GO has made is fantastic.

As Panos said, do remember to test the temperament feature. Actually the set plays a little cleaner even when equal temperament is choosen. This is because we intentionally tuned "sloppily" and only corrected the worst issues.

The help files in GO is, as Panos said, very useful nowadays. Also one of the goals with this set (and a few others that soon will follow) was to give working examples of what (and how) GO can do, both in regards to GUI and audio manipulation (tuning and voicing).

Kind regards

As previously noted, the GO ODF format is documented as part of our help (released under the GO project license).

The ODF documentation is currently written in telegram style for advanced users - any help in turning it (as well as the rest of the help) into something user friendly is welcome.

GOv3 manual in PDF - beta

Hi,

I decided to upload here exclusively on Magle IMF my first trial on getting a GO manual in a more common format (PDF) to be more easily readable and/or printable (Native Help file can't, at least here...).

I agree that it can be done more work on presenting this in more real manual style of writing, yes, I must have to find the time to get involved on this, though English is not my native language

I took the liberty on adding a Pitea set photo in the end... eh, IMHO is the best set to represent the new GO features so far.:whistle::shake:

I just hope I helped a bit on the matter.

Hello Lars, Graham and Panos,

Congratulations with the release of this very fine organ.
The sound is excellent, and the range of tone colours available makes it appropriate for many music styles.
Thank you very much for making it freely available.

Congratulations also to the GrandOrgue development team that significantly expanded its possibilities.

All the best.

Erik.

Hi!

Thanks, a very good observation on the organ character! This instrument was conceived to be able to play a very wide range of music as it was (until very recently) the largest and main organ for performance/teaching in the school!

As I'm a Linux user I have no motivation to create a true HW port of the sampleset, but others might have... Personally I'd prefer to spend my time developing other sets and help furthering the development of GrandOrgue.

Kind regards

Hi,

@giwro : he he, from the three of us I think only Graham knows the full odf procedure for HW :) but, yes, why not, in fact in our conversations we agreed that we will try to make many options for this set, a jOrgan version or versions can be made as well some other smaller versions for GO, like a two manual or an extended AGO (like in Burea) ect. The small positiv version we included in the main Pitea folder shows that. Pitea can be a very fine HW4 set as well.

@erikds : Hi Erik, thanks for your kind feedback. I know your affection to VPOs and your 1st class capabilities on testing them, so your opinions always count.
I also know your preference to the Renaissance era. The new v0305_831 build, with Pitea on, can give us alternate tunings. Did you try the Mean Tone one?
Selecting some stops appropriate for this?

Also, as I found out testing this 831 build, GO now can handle multi releases as well as multi attack and loops ! So this means more work to do.... but with the benefit of HQ sound, adding the 24/48000 rate loading. Developers did indeed an excellent work on this.
Indeed I'm thinking strongly for a 1m/1oct ped short octave Renaissance type GO set, advising users to use the MeanTone temperament. The thing is to choose the right ranks from main Pitea for this..... The Sion 1473 organ is a good example..... (dream on.....)

My best to both

Well, I know the HW CODM format pretty well - I did do the Wangerin Mini-trial set with it. I'm busy doing sample editing and coding for my own sets, but perhaps I can lend a hand.

At any rate, I'm pleased to see this released!

Thank you very much for this new release and for all your work.

I tried to load it with GrandOrgue 0.2, and it works fine too !

GrandOrgue looks a little bit like Hauptwerk now, don't you think so ?

Hi e9925248,

First I kinda "broke to pieces" the help file just by renaming it .7z and decompressed with 7z.
Then I opened Open Office and each document/page of the help file with a web browser (Explorer 9) and I started the copy/paste from Explorer to Open Office one by one.
The three images imported on related pages with image import function of Open Office.
Then , after all was on open office pages, I started editing to get a good appearance (fonts, size, colours, distance from theme to theme, images fit, first page layout ect)
When satisfied I exported this open office document as PDF.

Wasn't fast , but not so much time consuming either.... 4 hours or so. In general I don't like Help files so much, I prefer pdf and indeed as I come from old school I like the printed manual, because I can read it also away from my computer and have a more spherical knowledge on the matter - with window scroll down I break my nerves.
Also maybe because I used to read my hardware instruments manuals and because I still consider software instruments as...... instruments on their own, as I call them : modular ! (the keyboard controller and the laptop configuration with a single USB cable looks very much like a Moog Modular or the ARP 2600 :-D )

I agree with you that we must have a GO manual with more examples on odf elements and some pictures showing what's written. Also this pdf I uploaded deals with 0303, before some more functions are introduced in 0305_831 which I'm still learning how is done, like the multi release samples ( I love this feature!)
Also (Lars can help here) there must be a section instructing on how we can embed pitch info in each wav file , so the temperaments can work.

I'll give it a try, but not soon, as there are some more sets waiting completion :)

Hi Sesquialtera !

Thanks for the positive feedback :)

Just for the history : GrandOrgue is based on abandoned MyOrgan which is based on abandoned HW1...... So, one can see the roots. But as is now is a very new app totally different from previous releases. The code has been rewritten in CC++ and it still functions with an .organ file based on Hauptwerk v1.23.
The work done from GO's devs in unbelievable.
Hauptwerk 3 set new standards in VPO evolution, but also jOrgan3 which leads worldwide in Midi functions and GUI custom construction. HW4 has many gems that were in jOrgan long before !

There are million of people not having the money to buy and need a HQ VPO program so they can play in public, record or whatever without restrictions. Also needing an organ set to do this.
GO v0305_831 and Pitea do this and IMHO in a very high level !

I think, that there are better ways to create a PDF version. The help is written in docbook, which supports (customizable) conversions into multiple formats.

To get something editable, my current recommendation is:
Code:
docbook2rtf grandorgue.xml
Package docbook-utils need to be installed (either from any Linux distribution or Cygwin). This results in one RTF document with TOC, only the image import is not working correctly.

To produce directly a PDF, my current recommendation is:
Code:
dblatex grandorgue.xml -o grandorgue.pdf
Package dblatex needs to be installed (Cygwin or any linux distribution).

Both ways use predefined layout templates - the customization of these layout templates is possible.

I'll attach an up to date help generated with dblatex (covering the multi-rank support too).

I became a member (regular purchase) with Grandorgue 305, I know how to fix the stop sign, labels and more, but I have not figured out how to fix keyboards, x position, y position. Cansomeone kindly explain how to make?
Thank you.
Antonio.

I wrote it with google translator, I do not know English.

Hi!

In the respective [Manual999] section you can have the new options by adding lines for PositionX=(the x-value) and PositionY=(the y-value). This must be done for every manual (or pedal) that you wish to have in another position than what's according to the normal layout. Example usage in short version:

[Manual001]
PositionX=250
PositionY=450

Kind regards
