The Talyllyn Railway was the first preserved line in the country. Used to transport slate from the quarries dowwn to thye coast it is now probably the most famous narrow gauge railway in the world, having featured in some of the books written by the Rev. W Awdry.

The engine shown is Dolgoch built by Fletcher and Jennings in 1866 and was the first locomotive to pull a passenger train when the preservation socity was formed.

The picture below shows the end of the line where the slate wagons were winched up the first of the inclines leading up to the quarry.

I will add pictures to this thread and hope others will post as well.

Interesting thread my friend. We have afew trains that still run on the steam system here in the mountain lines near me. Great fun to ride them thriough the low mountains particularly in the fall color changes.

Some pics of the Swanage Railway preserved steam line nearest here (about 15 miles away)

30053 and 53 are the same loco, but wearing different paintjobs, 30053 is in British Railways (after 1948), 53 in WW2 black

The 2 models from my layout are of the same class as 53 but in the livery of mid 1930s.

Romney Hythe and Dymchurch railway locos, click on thumbnails for details and more pics

http://www.rhdr.org.uk/pages/locos.html

I'll hunt up some of my own pics from RH&D.

The stock is one third scale, most locos date from 1926/7 through 1930s based on contemporary prototypes, mostly UK types but with a few "furriners"

Another 15" gauge line is the Ravenglass and Eskdale in the Lake District, Cumbria, History here

Not visited this one myself, always wanted to though. Steam locos here

Good to see all your posts. I was not sure if this subject would be of interest (apart from Mike and I).

Another old engine Talyllyn built in 1864 again by Fletcher and Jennings. Still pulling trains and very popular. The saddle tank gives it a special look.

The Durango/Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (Durango, Colorado)

I've ridden this one numerous times ... a several hour trip from Durango to Silverton and back - takes most of the day.

Snowdon Mountain Railway,

Work started on this prodject in 1894 with help from Swiss engineers. It is a rack and pinion railway and when you discover that the steepest gradient is 1:5.5 you can see why. It runs from Llanberis to the top of Snowdon, a distance of approximately four and a half miles.

The end (or top) of the line.

A truly spectacular line

Interesting things about the Snowdon locos,

The boilers are inclined on the locomotives to ensure that the boiler tubes and the firebox remain submerged when on the gradient, a standard practice on mountain railways. The locomotive always runs chimney first up the mountain pushing a single carriage in front of it. For safety reasons the carriage is not coupled to the locomotive.

Fairebourne Steam Railway

Initially a tramway this railway has run between Fairebourne Village to Penrhyn Point since 1895. At Penrhyn you can take the ferry across the river, or walk across the bridge which also cariies main line trains. Running alongside the beach, similar to the RH&D line the service carries villagers as well as tourists.

Following the death of its principal benefactor this line is again in financial trouble. It would be a shame if it closed through lack of funds.

Next time you're over here Lars, I'll take you on a tour of some of the lines! I think there are about 8 or 9 within 2 -3 hours drive from here.
