• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Bach's 327th birthday anniversary

Hi everyone,

Please accept my humble contribution to J.S.Bach's 327th birthday anniversary (today), by playing his eternal Pastorale BWV590.
Organ is the Jorgensen tribute one for Hauptwerk 4.

Here's the link :

http://www.panosvirtual.org/Music/PastoraleBWV590.mp3

Info on how this piece is recorded :

Playing live on Yamaha EL-90 2m/p console (controller) with EMU-X-Midi to USB device to Acer laptop.
Hauptwerk 4 as VSTi link with Reaper 4 where convolution reverb (Cathedral) added.
.wav file recording, then to .mp3 at 320 kb/s.

Please enjoy.
Best

Hi all!

Errr... There's a little problem... Bach wasn't born today...
If you read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Sebastian_Bach you may read "Johann Sebastian Bach[SUP][1][/SUP] (21 March 1685, O.S.[SUP]31 March 1685, N.S.[/SUP] – (...)"

Now ik you click on "O.S." or in "N.S." you'll get the explanation. The gregorian calendar has been instituted around this time and substituted the julian calendar. According to the Julian calendar, Bach was born on 21 March which is the equivalent to our calendar's 31st March.
So, Bach's birthday will be in 10 days from now.

The interpretation is great! Congratulations!

Here is my contribution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDfGS1P2lNk
It has lots of mistakes because I'm not used to play on a real pipe organ. I don't play on a pipe organ more than three times a year and electronic organ sucks (sound is repugnant among other things)

Thanks, Panos for sharing this wonderful Bach piece. It's one of my favorites of the quieter pieces.

Good catch. However, and looking at the issue more loosely, Bach could be considered as the spring of music in some ways, so celebrating his birthday on the (astronomical) starting day of spring is a compromise I can live with. :)

@ Lars : Thank you very much my friend , glad you liked :)

@ Lombardo : Hey, long time no... talk :-D
I will insist on 21st, firstly because then they knew it was the 21st, secondly because is the triple 7 (21=3x7) and thirdly because it's the first day of Aries.
If we start converting dates with the Gregorian calendar we're gonna loose the base on many many historic personalities :)

Anyway many thanks for your kind words on 590 :) and I really enjoyed your video ! being two contributions to this thread counts plus ! I wish there were more.

@ pb05 : agreed !! :)

Well, it's just a date. The most important thing that Bach gave us wasn't his birthday date but his music. That's what realy matters.

I don't have much time to participate more on this forum. Sometimes I read the threads but I don't participate as much as I would like. I'll try to be more active.

Ahem, now I am on a non-speechless computer :p (meaning that it has sound output) and I can appreciate this beautiful interpretation. Thanks for sharing!

@Bill. Thank you my friend :) I tried to sound like being on an original. I know this is not the electronic/digital pages, but is not possible for me to do as you posted on your video. Just 15 pipe organs in the whole country, islands included. By the way thanks also for this. Very good sound !! and he plays the finale with passion !

@ Teddy. Thanks :) there's nothing to be jealous about my friend. Ask my wife about her patience hearing me practising again and again all over.... :-D

Hi Panos, very nice! Thanks for posting! Und frohe Weihnachten!

To me, Bach is the Four Seasons of music. ;)

OH YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! JSBACH is the composer for all reasons, seasons and everything in between - His music is ETERNAL and is in the timeline that is ETERNAL - The Alpha and the Omega - It knows no past, present, or future.............It will always be that which is used to judge everything else. Name a composition that can beat the B-minor Mass.............

Hi Marc :-D ! Thanks !! .... 5 seasons for me (I add the Chinese 5th season : End of Summer).

Br CD, agreed 100%
Hmmmm composition to beat Bm Mass....... let me think........ errrr hard it is...... Shostacovitch's 5th symphony comes close not much, but close enough. Also Mozart's Requiem.
But for organ....... this is the hardest of all !! Possibly Messianen or Frank or.... nah this is very hard... beyond my power, cannot answer :-D
