• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Hello members. Newbee today.

Anyone know about pipe organs installed before the year 1600?
was the 16 foot pipe invented, or was it still to come?

Anywhere in the world as long as it was before 1600.

Thank you anyone in advance.

regards

Well, the oldest one still in working condition as far as I know is the Compenius Organ at Fredericksborg Slot in Denmark. It was built in 1610 I believe and has two 16' in the pedal. I'm not sure if that helps since it's not before 1600.

The oldest playable organ in the world with a 16' stop is in Sion, Switzerland. It dates from 1430.

oldest organ with 16 ft stop reply

Thank you very much to all members for your replies. I do appreciate you help in the matter.

I have another question which someone might have knowledge of:

Concerning the organ builder Henry Willis: Juist how far back did that firm make organs? I seem to recall a Henry Willis in the late Elizabethan period who was a master builder. Anyone help?

best wishes to all

I believe that aross30 is right - and that there are three ranks from the original organ...Hmmm, maybe some exhaustive research on "Die-Orgelsite" and maybe a visit to "Piporg-L" will help to settle the matter........

It is the oldest and the strange thing is that this is not a lone 16' but when draw the stop there's a 16'+8' combination .
The full name is Subbass II (16'+8') and is permanently coupled to the manual.

there's a thread here about this organ , started by my friend Bill :)

Also Holy Trinity Smecno organ of 1587 has a subbass 16' stop.

Jakobikirche in Lubeck has two organs of very early origins. The Kleine Orgel, and most likely the Grosse Orgel, have 16' Prinzipals dating back to around 1500. Both are in the Hauptwerk in each organ and are painted.

And I looked up Koorkerk in Middelburg, NL, just now and was tempted to say that the central tower of this organ (1479) has a 16' Principaal, but closer examination revealed that the longest pipe appears to be around 12' (speaking length). Voorzichtig!
