• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Hello,

I would like get your feedback on the latest recording I made. It's a fugue by G. A. Sorge (1703-1778).

Enjoy!

That is fantastic Mat much better than all that jazz you have been filing your head with lately. Seriously I really enjoyed it.

Thanks, gentlemen. How did you find the tempo and registration?

Colin, I have been enjoying every minute of it thoroughly, thank you.

Hard for me to say i.e. tempo as I do not know the composer:but does seem abit slow for a fugue to me. Perhaps add a mixture( or reed) to your registration. Thanks again for posting

Very enjoyable, Mat ...

I couldn't find much on this composer ... except a few works for organ on IMSLP ... Wikipedia hasn't much to say about him, except he was apparently friends with JS Bach.

Didn't find much on the Internet either, Lars. As you say, there's only a few scores on IMSLP and a couple vids on youtube (but not of the fugue). No recordings whatsoever on Naxos. All the more, I think it's worth preserving some of his works that are available.

Bill, the score didn't provide any info on registration or tempo. The shortest note value (except for three bars) is a quarter, so I took that as a hint of tempo indication.

HI Mat and friends,
Sorry for my late reply.....

Hey, very well done Mat ! 8,4,2+1'1/3 ? It sounds good and with a smooth reverb revealing the fugue not confusing the themes.
A 2 rank mixture (Cymbale II?) could be very helpful to reveal the bass notes of the theme, agree with Bill, and of course close 1'1/3 then.

Great contribution from you, my friend. Sorge has very limited reference indeed. This fugue reminds me a bit of Pachelbel style :)
I believe you can try recording all the available works you can find on scores!
I'll keep your file as main reference here, along with other info (Wiki,Imslp ect).

Tempo..... OK could be a little faster, especially on a performance up to play the quarter as 8th (LOL LOL), but is enjoyable as it is !

Best to all

Hey Panos,

Long time no... talk. How are you?

You almost got that right. There was also a 2' 2/3 used. And I did use a mixture, but rank IV. I recorded this fugue using Enigma set - I had limited choice, so no Cymbale :)

Glad you liked it, though. If you feel like recording Sorge's other works you can post them in this thread.

Thanks for link, I did not want to admit that I had not heard of him.

Hi Mat :) Gladly I'm still fine, but money is completely out in our family... all gone to... taxes, extra more taxes and there are no jobs too. So you see how it is.

Ah, I was thinking that I'm listening to a 2'2/3.... somewhere. But the mixture IV..... Hmmm need to clean my ears better and listen again. On the other hand if the Mixture 4 is based on 2', so its 1st rank goes like 2'>2'2/3> 4' and so on, possibly doubled many notes on the 8+4+2+2'2/3+1'1/3.
Now you made me go back and look in my archive for that Enigma composite set and listen. LoL
I did a GrandOrgue version a year back or so...

Sorge works.... why not, but I have to do some Dandrieu (again..I like him !) and Couperin for an upcoming HW set. I was very pleased that for example Magne posed those Bach, Bux and Franck recordings I've done on Jorgensen and Major I ACO sets on his site. During winter time I'll certainly go for some Sorge and Walther too (remember the thread?).

I was saying that you can try one or two more !!

Glad to see you again here

Best

Thanks, Panos. Can't say anything about that but I do like to SWING every now and then. Not sure though if I should ever post it here.

And Teddy, it's all good as long as you enjoy it, so don't worry about anything else
