• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

GO 0.3 will not start

On my computer GO 0.2 is functioning correctly. I downloaded GO 0.3 and the install gave no problem but when I start GO 0.3 I get a notice 'An error has occurred, the program will be closed'.
My PC runs Win XP-Sp3, AMD Sempron 2000 MHZ, 1.5 GB ram and my soundcard is M-audio 2496.
Can somebody tell me what is going wrong?

Hi Widukind and welcome to the forum :)

Give some more info please..., for example which version of 0.3 ? 1086 is the latest "experimental" though here it works smooth and stable (win7 64bit)
I presume you're on 32bit XP?
I remember this warning from GOv02 when tried to load corrupt samples. But you didn't try to load any set... no?

Thank you, Ghekorg7 for your fast reaction.
I tried GrandOrgue-0_3_0_6_TDM64.win32.1081.exe and setup_GrandOrgue_0_3_0_5_TDM64.win32.no_sse3.991.exe with the same results.
Yes I'm on 32bit XP and no, I couldn't load any samples because the program didn't start.

Hi Widukind :)

mmmm 1081 should work at once after successful installation....
No matter which stuff you got there, is starts with minimum default settings common on windows OS

Also doesn't seem like a framework issue on your OS as it showed its GUI and message.

This goes beyond my abilities, but at least you can do another try :

1. using "e" 's latest version (the one without Asio) and see what happens.
2. Can you disable your external M-audio soundcard and see if GO works ? (direct sound, MME)

"e", JLD, astazou, Lars , Graham, can throw more light and help here.

See you soon.

Hi Ghekorg, thanks for your interest.

To clarify: GO did not show its GUI, the error notice is produced by Windows (?): "An error has occurred in GO. GO will now close."
I rather think that my soundcard is not the culprit but I'll try your experiment. By "e" 's latest version you mean the 1081?

Hi widukind again :)

Framework..... possibly.

"e" 's version is here :

https://sourceforge.net/projects/e9925248.u/files/GrandOrgue/2012-08-16/

This one has no Asio support, but great Wasapi (win7 only), so you'll experiment with DS only. Plays great too and very stable here (win7)
1086 made by astazou is based on above commit, adding Asio, which I'm using because I need the ReaRouteAsio connection with Reaper.
Erik is using "e" 's with Wasapi multichannel audio for great pleasures :) LOL

It smells like Framework update needed...

Remote diagnose is extremly difficult in such situations. The crash dialog should provide further informations, that may give me a first clue. Is windows also creating a dump file/crash report?

The current GO build require a processor supporting SSE3 - a processor without SSE3 will crash GO [The nosse builds are less optimized, so they require a less capable processor].

GO should work on XP 32bit - the only computer specific part is the "discovery" of all sound/midi devices/drivers on the computer at GO startup. So a bad driver could crash GO.

Hello e, thanks for your interest,

My processor is AMD Sempron Barton and does not have SSE3, I think. So GO build 1081 won't work and I should try the 991version with -no SSE3-?
I installed setup_GrandOrgue_0_3_0_5_TDM64.win32.no_sse3.991.exe.
Install went fine but the program crashes on startup.
The crash dialog says:
AppName: grandorgue.exe AppVer: 0.3.0.6 ModName: grandorgue.exe
ModVer: 0.3.0.6 Offset: 00298461

I have updated .NET Framework.
GO 0.2 still works fine on the same computer so the sound drivers can't be bad?
On my wife's computer (laptop with Win 7) GO 0.3 works correctly.

GO does not use .NET.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sempron, the Bartons only support SSE (not SSE2, SSE3).

JDL has done that nosse build - I guess it has been optimized for SSE2.

Hello e,

Updating .NET was a suggestion by Ghekorg7.
According to my information AMD Sempron Barton only supports SSE and not SSE2 or 3.
So I'm stuck with GO 0.2 unless I can talk my wife into my using her laptop? That won't be too hard, I suppose.

Hi Widukind :)

Updating framework, I've seen many apps show up in similar situations, so I thought, but didn't know GO doesn't use Net :) (thanks e)

"Wives Lap" case..... LOL My wife has a better one than mine ! (me Pentium T4400 2.2GHz - she i5 Sandy Bridge 2.3GHz)....... She did let me install GO 0306 and test a few things, installing some 5GB sets max..... (I tested with CME keyboard on my laps ... headphones on) and this is it. No way to take it into the organ room and play...... LOL LOL

I wish you better luck over there ! LOL

You can get HQ results with GO 02, using dry or semi dry sets with Jack Portaudio and VST reverb and other FX made stand alone with savihost.
This was the standard before GO 03 introduced the multi attack/Release function.
For temperaments..... only the old pipe tune can help, which multiplies the GB of a set with each tuning....
Or get a new pc with minimum standards now days : i3 Sandy Bridge (Ivy is more expensive) at 2.3GHz, 4GB ram, win7 x64 around 450euros....

Yes, it is probably time to upgrade. Again 'thank you' to you, Ghekorg 7, and to you, mr. e for your help.
At least I know now where I am at.

I updated all Windows installer to version 1087 (latest trunk on 24/9/2012).
There is also a version without sse2 and sse3.
