• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

A Virtual Org'chestra

Hello !

I've just finished my org'chestra.
It's a free sound bank for Hauptwerk or GrandOrgue,
but instead of organ stops, I made a selection of orchestral instruments.

Sorry, the names are in french.
Feel free to share/transform/translate ...
and tell me what you think !

You need winrar to paste the parts of the file
(for hauptwerk users : go to "file", and "import haupwerk1 format" ...)

( select 512 kbps and wait for the question at the end of the ad )

have fun !!

I did a very small version of something similar back in January, but only using a flute and harpsichord to play some John Stanley trio sonatas etc. I posted some at the time. I did download quite a few other instruments then, but have not expanded them all as yet, think I did a violin and some brass.

How do you play more than 4 instruments at a time with 3 manuals and pedal, I presume you select more than one instrument to a manual, but then those selected for a particular manual will all be playing the same notes.

Mike,
I use my Org'chestra like I use an organ for improvisation ...
Try the soft strings (chords) on a manual, solo clarinet on an other, and double bass pizzicato to pedal.
Think as a theater organist, and not as a conductor...
Of course, it's not possible to play orchestral scores : we still have only two hands and feet !!

Hi Mike

1 Instrument per manual
as many manuals as req
couple them together
then set the max/min velocity on each manual.
Ive not tried this as yet but should be interesting

Ah, but I don't use a keyboard, I import scores to Finalé from which I play midi files through GO, 1 channel per manual/pedalboard (is there a limit to number of manuals on GO?) so theoretically I could play 16 channels given enough manuals, (enough for a swing big band, 4 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, piano, guitar, bass and drums).

Thinking further, it should be possible to play 2 manuals and pedal as well as the midi inputs thus giving 19 instruments using chords could give say 1st and 2nd violins from 1 manual, (soon have a virtual LSO if we work on it)

2 tracks from John Stanley opus 1, I still have not sorted out exactly how best to interpret figured bass, so the harpsichord parts are "work in progress" but it does show what can be done.

I say it again : "it is not made for playing orchestral score".
My sounds don't have any crescendo or sforzando effects.
If you want to reproduice orchestral effects, you need to buy a "real virtual" orchestra,
such as "EastWestQuantumLeap" or ViennaSymphonicOrchestra"
but the prices and the size are not the same ...

Not being able to understand French, what/where should one click to download? Also why select 512kbps when I have a 10Mb cable connection?

For the Harpsichord I used the Blanchet set, the flute came from the Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra, a free orchestral sample library.

http://sso.mattiaswestlund.net/

The SSO samples are stereo, 16 bit, 44kHz. Melodic instruments and chromatic percussion are sampled in minor 3rds. Staccato/pizzicato patches have 2x round-robin. All samples have varying amounts of stage ambience, depending on their front-to-back placement, but in addition to that a good hall reverb is a must.

I had to expand the sets from minor thirds to full octaves and add loops and release.

As I mentioned previously I am not a keyboard player, so can't improvise, hence my use of scores and midi;

Another example, a Corelli sonata:

Hi Sesquialtera :)

Great idea !!
We did some other examples in jOrgan forum/users list .
Great to see for GO and HW too.

Now one problem : GO is not velocity sensitive (or is it?), as is HW and jOrgan... so it will bee , yes, like a Theater Organ more or less :)
In HW4 will sound great I presume with velocity on !

I got EWQL symphonic Orch free version (one of the few lucky ones.....) back from Dec 2009 limited offer with full license .
The other FREE and HQ SO is the Sonatina one (sfz format, but the samples are there....).
Add the Salamander Grand Piano (free too - Yamaha C7).

It will need much work to transform it for HW, because of the multi velocity samples from pp to ff ect.

No sweet for jOrgan though (as a midi controller), because I can use the multi timbral function of the Orchestra module (16 channels midi) and create 16 stops on jOrgan for controlling each one and spread them on my 2m/p console setup. Adding some more organ stops from Grand Orgue (Prib positiv is a good set for this) I can have organ and orchestra together.

jOrgan controls EWQL SO and GO (midi) and Jack 1.9.9.4 mixes the audio to Asio. mmmmm super.
For audio the other way is to use Reaper and RearouteAsio driver (on both SO and GO) and get high pro recordings with them !

I'll go to get your set and test it. I'll post asap (too many projects at the same time here.....)

Cheers and best

Unfortunatly lines like this create error warnings in GO
StopNumber001=-001 ;Choir - R-01.

The Semicolon and everything after it have to be removed.

It seemed to take forever to clean up the BARTON.

Yep :)
But it doesn't affect Grand Orgue's performance, function or sound at all.
It's just an info that anything written after ; is invalid ie doesn't mean anything and is ignored.

Just click OK and play. Though I too cleaned up a lot of sets.... :) even my custom ones ! LOL

On the other hand, it was a helping line for the set creator to know and see easier in the middle of construction, adding/deleting lines, where he is.
I'm still adding these , like StopNumber023=023 ; Cornet II , during construction and when ready I delete them :-D

Full line comments are supported, so you can write
; Cornet II
StopNumber023=023

GO supports using the velocity for second touch. If you want more than currenty implement, please come up with a proposal (how should it work and you would put it in the ODF).

Good to know ! So in general combis section (if one wants to create some on main window) can we type also the name of the stop ?

Velocity.... For GO would be useful if we had a clavichord, fortepiano, piano and orchestral instruments to a given set.
Many will say, why bother, we got many other samplers for these (like Linuxsampler for example).

But, all those samplers cannot give total control of the opened modules (midi channels) from one controller , like a simple on/off as we do on organs. At least by their own. So far we can do this by engaging jOrgan as midi controller. This works great but needs 3 apps to be on : Sampler, LoopMidi, jOrgan. And if the sampler has not built in effects, these increase to 5 : Sampler/Jack/Vst(standalone)/LoopMidi/jOrgan.

So it would be great for Go to have classic velocity, because it would be a super sample player for any sampled instrument, without leaving its environment.
But this way it would be more than a pipe organ simulator. Like a virtual Electone organ for example :)

How to implement? Many approaches no doubt, but the simpler the better. Like Velocity on/off. If on, value 0~127.

Hi Mike :)

You're right.
Even if I know French, there's no download in any of those links our friend Sesquialtera posted. Just tried.

On the left is the antivirus download and on the right an evaluation app, which doesn't work either.

No GO set.

Any ideas?

1-Select the size of your internet connexion
2-watch or read the advert
3-reply to the simple question or copy the key word
(it's not so hard to guest-understand) or copy the line and use google translate
4-click to the link

Good luck !

Hi Martin.
Would it be possible to implement convolution reverb at windchest level (after any enclosure).
Then by using easy to loop dry samples, any Organ in any room/hall could be modelled
Making the need for multiple loops and multiple releases a thing of the past.
The key off would then represent just that (the decay of the pipe).

Hi!

One approach would be to have a line VelocitySensitive=Y (or N, standard if not present) for the stops/ranks just like we have the Percussive effect. Then for those stops that have Y one need to not throw away the velocity information like (I think) GO does at the moment in the MIDI processing.

P.S. I'd like to have a feature to select which attack sample is played depending on the velocity of the attack (and not chosen randomly), but that's perhaps a bit far out...

Kind regards
