On gun ownership for self preservation, in NZ you are only allowed to use minimum force necessary to protect your self etc. a gun would not be OK in any situation so you are at the mercy of the law as well as the crims,
also if everyone were allowed to carry a gun it plays into the hands of the crims and thugs making it easier for them plus a gun is a remote way of killing (school killings in USA) it gets much harder and personal if you have to strangle or stab so what I am getting at is gun ownership as a right is wrong in today's society. as usual IMO

We have the same rules here regarding appropriate force. If certain people who had been carefully checked and trained were allowed to carry it would make a lot of criminals more careful. It is relatively easy to obtain an illegal weapon but much much harder to obtain a legal one. Therefore it tends to be only the criminals who have the handguns. Even young children who are involved in gangs/drugs are know to carry.

By carry do you mean on their person at all times?? I would like all homes to have a hand gun with a max range of say 15 ft perhaps a sawn off shot gun .410 1.5 inch cartridge should do it, so that you could defend but even that could be abused.

JHC, change of subject.

I'm in the "land of the long white cloud" this week doing some water supply work - thought I'd better warn you if you detect a change in the taste of your cuppa tea.

The argument for and dagainst gun ownership will run and run but look at Switerland. The highest rate of gun ownership, the lowest rate of crime. America almost has to be ignored because of the lack of controll over gun control. i,e who can own/carry and gun storage.

Ban them completely and destroy every one of them, OK a big, nigh impossible, job, but probably the only effective way; what do we need them for anyway? About the only real use I can see is for defense against wild animals, however if you don't venture on foot where wild animals roam free then you would not be in danger; if you're worried about wild animals killing your chickens or other stock, build a better fence.

Anybody found in possession of a firearm gets locked away with Bubba for 30 years.

Admittedly this would not be welcomed by our American cousins where it would seem guns are worshipped or treated as a fetish by the majority, at least this is the impression we get from media reports, the gun lobbyists, and what sometimes passes as "literature".

Yeah! You can't blame the Americans.
They've got Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Labanese, Iraquis, Iranis, Egyptians, Russians, even rogue English,
all bombing, kidnapping, murdering, spreading air-borne viruses, blowing up buildings, assassinating,
all the time all over the disUnited States, in continuous movies and TV shows,
even if none of that has happened within their country by people from those countries.
I think they don't like India now just because "Slum Dog Millionaire" won the Oscar for best picture.
Remember the Caribs.

Nice idea Mike, if only it was workable. While we have the situation were only criminals and the ruling class (politicians etc) have guns then the ordinary members of the public are at risk. I personally have been in the situation, under threat, where a gun would have got me out safely. Just the threat of it can be the solution.

I agree with Mike in respect to a total ban but it still leaves vulnerable people at risk I think some form of self defence is required in the home. @teddy I also had a recent situation when I was confronted by an adult male of about 30 years now had I been 40 odd years younger I would have had a go but common sense took over and all I received was verbal abuse which was very nasty but at least I am still here but with a bruised ego.

Yes Colin we have all been there and as we get old unfortunately the risk of being there increases unless you wish to just kneel down and die quietly. Total firearms ban means everybody and as I keep saying the firearms ban in this country merely means that honest people do not have guns but criminals do.

We could send every one we dont like to Pitcairn Is and give them a load of guns and just another food for 20% of them and come back 6 months later - see who is left.

The whole thing would be filmed by spy satellites of course and we could call it ultimate survivour and put it on pay TV.

You know the usual suspects the teatowl heads, skin heads, bikers and the like....................

That is because the laws needs beefing up and a much harsher punishment e.g. no excuses such as "its not mine' and tougher penalties 'minimum 5 years hard labour' for first offence and 20 years there after, some hope eh
