• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Minor Problem

I'm running V0.3.0.3 on XP, 4Gb RAM using a Blanchet 1720 sample set plus flute. Split screen with Finalé in second (tiled) window.

Runs lovely most of the time, except when I take a bit of time editing with GO sat on the task bar and a PDF reader on screen with Finalé.

When I get back to GO to play what I've just edited it often crashes, is it likely to suffer with 2 or 3 other apps running (Blanchet + flute is only equal to 3 ranks so shouldn't take much RAM) Seems to happen most often when I've just selected record.

Which release is currently most stable under XP?

As usual I am "driving" GO from Finalé via MIDI, or sometimes from Midiocre if I need to tweak the MIDI file, no keyboard in use.

Your 0.3.0.3 must be older than February 2012. Can you try the current "unstable development versions"?

One note about GO versioning/development:
The GO version has been 0.3.0.6 for some time. We currently use the SVN revision (trunk is current r1109) to distringuish between versions - It is usually appended to the version number in the installer.
The current GO development model:
* Changes are added to our SVN repository.
* From time to time, new builds are published, which are tested by various people.
* If no regressions are reported after some time, the build is considered "stable".

Uploaded 0.3.0.6, now have an even worse problem, notes sound like they are being produced by somebody gargling - very heavily modulated and distorted, tried different sample sets no change, so gone back to 0.3.0.3 notes perfect.

I don't use Asio or any Reverb, Sound card (Sigma-Tel) output goes from PC to a Technics stereo amp driving KEF C20 speakers. I note 0.3.0.6 has a reverb setting (which wouldn't set to 0) changing it had no effect on the gargle!

Hi!

Later GO have many different audio drivers/backends available for selection. It's likely that one that's not so good for your system is automatically selected when you tried 0.3.0.6.

The best test would be to have a look at what driver/backend you're using in 0.3.0.3 and then try the same settings with 0.3.0.6. You set the audio device/driver in the dialog reachable from Audio/Midi -> Audio/Midisettings Audio Output tab. Select current device/driver and then hit the Change button to select another one.

For instance for me the RtAudio (those without (PA) in the names) work better = lower perceived latency at similar settings, but you can have different results.

Kind regards

P.S. The Reverb in the toolbar only decide how much of the release tail existing in the samples will be used. It's main use is to shorten the release so that samples containing much reverb might be used in locations with much reverb (like churches), or simply if you don't want to have so much reverb.

Kind regards

Thanks Lars, seems sorted on a quick check, selected direct drive without PA, played a few flute and harpsichord notes OK, will play further tomorrow!

The PA backends use a second configuration value (desired latency). Use the properties button on the sound card entry to change it.

PS: S
tarting with r1075, the default value is 60 instead of 15 (with sample per buffer = 1024) to be hopfully on the save side. What would the various GO users recommend as save default?

Hi
Using Grandorgue as a realtime musical instrument requires that these settings are set as low as possible.
Grangorgue is a good stable application, all problems with it's use are hardware/operating system related.
I think if the installer was placed in a rar or zip file including A readme first type doc, explaining the importance of these settings, Then anyone new to the program would get a better first impression.

I agree with John here.

Also I believe a setting of 512 (1024 is much latency even for start...) and 20ms could be a starting point. I mean any serious user needing Go to play sampled pipe organs will must have (today) some 4 GB ram, a dual core CPU and 5.200rpm on HDD as minimum.... not that nevertheless I have seen less powered OS (like my son's netbook with Celeron 1.3GHz and 2GB ram) performing good/issue free (provided the user being wise and loads wisely).
So even on those smaller systems a setting of 512/20ms works OK.

Users are requesting GO build for old systems, which even lack SSE.

In my option, the defaults should be so, that even on such old systems, they get a working GO (no sound artificats).

Hi
As you state, the difference in performance of systems is so great that the "Out of the box experience"is not possible.
The user needs to know about these settings, before they start to use GO.

Best wishes
john

Old systems without SSE... yep I know.
If this is the case then yep it should go to more common settings for start.

Anyway, speaking personal , it's nothing for me to change settings for my system... after all it will happen once. Then GO will remember all.

Showing my ignorance etc what is SSE?????? I tried Google but nowt there relating to computers, just some UK company with those initials.

My PCs are Gateway models about 5 years old, the one I use for music has dual core pentium 2.8GHz, 4Gb Ram, on board Sigma Tel audio, 2x160Gb HDD, the other used for internet and photo work same except only 3Gb RAM. Both run XP SP3

External to the music PC output is to a Technics anp driving KEF C20 speakers, input is available from a Farfisa TK67, rarely used, except for checking harmonies and progressions when trying to interpret figured bass notation into actual notes, about time we had some notation software that could interpret it! (thinks:- start a thread about it)

SSE is an instruction set extension for processors. An instruction set refers to the basic set of commands and instructions that a microprocessor understands and can carry out. SSE stands for streaming SIMD extensions. See for instance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streaming_SIMD_Extensions.

Current processors support many more versions of extensions that will make it possible to optimize the compilation (the compiled programs execution performance) much more.

Seems to be my week for problems, GO pedal seems to be playing an octave higher than the MIDI note coming in from a file (same with files coming from either Finalé notation app or Midiocre MIDI editing app) Tried transposing the Finalé bass line down an octave, pedals then played 2 octaves high!

Clicking on GO notes on screen no problem. Somewhat baffled!

I'll try and connect my keyboard tomorrow, see what happens then!

Well the octave problem has gone away, not sure what I actually did to cure it. Today more hair lost when GO would not open the most recent .organ file, but kept on going for the last one of yesterday, checking the file properties showed it was today's version, I eventually saved a renamed version of the file and deleted the previous one. Sorted.

I inadvertently discovered that double clicking on the .organ file opens GO, since when did this happen?

Lars is losing me on his Screencasts, things I've not heard of and so far I can't see me using some of the more advanced items. Time will tell!
