• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

    This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

    As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

    In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Baroque instrument sample sets

Picked up some "sound bytes" of a few instruments, so far have produced sets for Cornett (AKA Zink) and Shawm. They should play on GO, (I hope - I'll try that tomorrow)

I managed to extract usable notes from each and pitch shifted them to get a bit over the original range; as many of the instruments of that time came in various sizes I figured I could then cope with work written for say Soprano, Alto or Tenor instruments. I'm not too happy with the upper half octave or so of the Cornett, have I possibly overdone the pitch shifting? Both sets I started with a D Midi note 62, so the top end of the cornett set is shifted nearly 2 octaves!

I did it all the long winded way - with Audacity followed by Sample Looper, which I notice is no longer available for download. I would be glad of any comments on ways to improve. I use Audacity mainly because it's sort of "Point and Shoot" and hardly has a learning curve, more of a slight bend?

I've concentrated on wind instruments so far. Initially I will try out solo instruments with harpsichord on GO, then move on, adding more instruments.

Cornett, not to be confused with the modern cornet, and Shawm. Renaissance wind ensemble here we come.

Baroque instrument samples, now with music!

Now added the Crumhorn to the selection;

The following Walond voluntary is "arranged" for Cornett, Shawm and Crumhorn

I've reloaded the sample files as I've made a few adjustments, added the Crumhorn and a very basic .organ file.

I had to zip the .organ files cos it's not on the accepted file types list.

I had to change the relative volume settings as the Shawm nearly drowned the Cornett and Crumhorn.

. . . I had to zip the .organ files cos it's not on the accepted file types list.

I think it would be very beneficial to have .organ files added to the accepted files list. Once I hear back from Mike on what the max file size would be, I can then define that type of attachment and add it to the list.
