I have Last.fm playing almost all day every day. I have quite an extensive "library" selected, mix of Baroque, Jazz, Big band swing mainly.

Although I probably have over a hundred albums for it to choose from I sometimes get the same track 2 or 3 times a day, and maybe 6 or more tracks from the same album as the repeated tracks hardly ever played if at all.

On a few occasions I can recall having tracks repeated after an hour or so. I like most of the tracks which get repeated, occasionally one will start to get stale so I delete it for a time, but this rarely brings up any of the rarely or unplayed tracks.

Any ideas or suggestions? Is it maybe better to compile one's library from individual tracks instead of albums, artists and composers, I can see where doing that could get to be a PITA selecting a large enough library for some variety, but would al the selected tracks get played, or still the "Last.fm top 50" of what I have selected. At least it is something I have selected.

One is reminded of broadcast radio, rarely playing anything outside of a limited range of titles/artists/composers. Example: we get a lot of Beethoven, Mozart, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, etc, some Bach, occasional Rameau, too much Einaudi (one work a month would be too much for me). Yet I have only ever heard one of John Stanley's works, (voluntary opus 6 number 5) very rarely anything by Purcell, Croft or Boyce. I can't quote examples from "pop" channels as I never listen to them since no kids left in the house, but they were just as bad way back when!

I wonder if it chooses a random selection of the tracks you have selected and if so is it random enough, or whether the law of averages is playing a little game with you.

Nah, I don't call "random" picking about 15% - 20% of the tracks of the total selected and ignoring the rest, about the best "hit rate" for number of tracks from any album would be about 4 or 5 from a total of 15 plus on the album; of that 4 or 5 probably 2 of them will come up almost hourly, the others maybe once a day; some albums maybe one or two tracks appearing once or twice a week, the rest never that I can remember.
