• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

Macintosh OS/X: how to get sound?

Hi,

Today I found out about GrandOrgue (0.3.1.1142), and it looks interesting. However, I'm on a mac (OS X 10.8.2), and I can't find out how to get any sound out of it. I loaded sample sets, I pushed some of the ranks, and clicked on keys on the keyboard, and I moved the SW up and down. There is a meter on top of the window that shows activity, but I don't hear anything. I've tried various sound interface options, but none give any audible result. Is there someone who can tell me what to do?

Thanks in advance,

Theo

Top left of organ display, click Audio/Midi, there are settings available there to select your sound device/card (not sure what the term is in Mac speak), Midi and other settings, if the meter bars are moving, you are generating sound, but it doesn't know the way out so to speak. You can also record the sound and save as .wav and playback later.

Others who know far more about GO than I do, can no doubt give much more detailed information.

Thanks for your answer. I did manage to record some sound, but nothing is being played through any of the attached sound interfaces. I've been looking for a Mac FAQ, but can't find anything, so I'm a bit in the dark. Any Mac users that got it working out here?

I'm not a OS X user, but the GO audio output config should be that way:
* One audio interface beyond the root [you need to find the right one].
* Two channels defined on the audio interface
* The left audio group added to channel 1 (0 dB)
* The right audio group added to channel 2 (0 dB)

Ok, that helped. Thanks to both.

To anyone else who encounters this problem: follow the steps above and make sure your audio interface is set to 44.1kHz and 24 bit.

24 bit should not matter - this only affects the in memory sample format. Audio processing always happens in IEEE float.

Weirdly enough, it gave me a "audio engine frame size 15" message or something like that. I couldn't find what it meant, but changing the sample size to 24 seemed to do the trick. I'm a bit confused by GO's audio interface, but these steps work for me...

I would need the exact error message to provide further explantions.
Did you mean the samples per buffer with frame size?

Hi,

It says literally: "Audio engine wants frame size of 14 blocks which is indivisible by 16" when I choose the "Apple Inc.: Built-in Output" in 44.1kHz; I think it said "15 blocks" when I changed it to 48kHz, but it won't let me change it right now (apps open). It says: "RtAudio error: RtApiCore::probeDeviceOpen: timeout waiting for sample rate update for device (3)" when I choose my Tascam audio interface.

However, it works when I choose the "Core (PA)" devices. They don't always show up in the same order, and I hadn't realized there was a difference. Perhaps the non compatible audio devices could be suppressed?

GO has certain requirements for samples per buffer.
RT audio based backends only work with block sizes (sample per buffer) supported by GO and your OS/audio hardware, while portaudio (PA) based backends reblock, if necessary.

Hello, I am having the same problem. Mac OS X, GrandOrgue 0.3.1.1142. I can see the meters show that sound is being generated when I press the keys, but I can't get any sound from any audio interface.

Initially, I was getting sound from the built-in audio interface. Then I tried changing to an external audio interface (Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6), and now I can't get any sound even after switching back to the built-in audio.

In the Audio/Midi settings dialog, choosing non-PA audio devices gives the error message "Audio engine wants frame size of 14 blocks which indivisible by 16". Choosing the PA version of either built-in or Komplete Audio 6 does not give the message, but there is no sound.

I notice that my audio devices only show up with Channel 1 underneath. There is no Channel 0, and I don't see any way of adding channels or assigning audio groups.

Is there a way to reset the configuration so that at least I can get some sound from the built-in audio? I really would prefer to use my external audio, though.

OK, I figured it out. To add channels, you have to click on a channel and click on the Add button at the bottom. To assign an audio group to a channel, you click on the channel and click the Add button again.

Kind of a cryptic UI. . . . But it's hard to beat the price!

Just out of curiousity, what version of OSX are you guys running? I have 10.6.8 here and GrandOrgue 0.3.1.1142 seemed to install fine, but crashed on opening. Sent a crash report to the dev folks in the Sourceforge discussion group. I've been running HW 4 here for quite a while with no apparent problems and channeling the output through GarageBand for my echo and reverb functions. I'd like to try GrandOrgue on my Mac, but maybe I missed something somewhere? Haven't tried it yet on windows, but I have used it before in Linux.
