What is your favourite Stravinsky work?

My favourites are 'Le Sacre du Printemps', 'Petrushka' and 'The Firebird' (all ballets- not sure why). The end of the Firebird has to be one of the most exciting things to listen to in all music...

Ballets... and the opera he never wrote

Les noces (a.k.a. The Wedding) ...Not very popular when it came out.

I heard there was an opera in the works -- a collaboration between Stravinsky and Dylan Thomas, but Thomas' death in 1953 prevented its completion. I'm sure I would have loved that.

Le Sacre du Printemps! And it's also the most dangerous thing to conduct! :nut: Have anyone tried? My arms feels like spaghetti especially after the 'The Augurs of Spring'!

I prefer this recording:

with Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker.

Firebird...

Firebird moves me like few other pieces of music do. I was at the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra last Saturday and one of the encores was an excerpt...I was so disappointed they didn't continue to the fanfare at the end, but it was still magnificent.

Hi Edward,

It`s nice that you agree with me about this piece. That`s odd, that they would only play an excerpt; I too would be very disappointed not to hear that fantastic ending...

Hi hornsalvig,

I think you mean 'L`Histoire du Soldat' [SIZE=-1] (The Soldier’s Tale.) I`m afraid I find this piece is a little too wacky. Which is odd for me.... Never saw it performed though, have only heard recordings, so what do I know.

One more vote for the Rite of spring (Sacre du printemps), although the other early ballets (Firebird, Petrushka) are great as well.

A tough call. Either one of his better ballets - Rite, Agon, or, most likely, Petrushka - or the Symphony in Three Movements.
