suggestions for cello/piano duet

Hey there,

Does anyone know of any good pieces for cello and piano they would suggest for solo & ensemble? preferably a classical piece. Cellist has been playing for 7 yrs and is in chamber orchestra. Pianist has been playing the piano for 12 w/ most recent piece completed, chopin's fantasie-impromptu. thanks.

the repertoire for cello are not one of my strongest sides... yet... - but what about the beethoven sonatas for cello and piano as far as I remember they are both lyrical and very much in the "classic-idiom"... - There's also a piece by Robert Schumann called "Adagio and Allegro" - originally written for horn and piano but also available for cello and piano... it's quite good - the horn version at least

There are a lot of beautiful music for cello and piano. I play the cello with a piano myself, and I have some recommanations. You probably know the "pop-pieces":

Vocalise - Rachmaninoff
Elegie - Fauré
the Swan - Saint-Saëns
Kol Nidrei - Bruch

But a very recommendable piece is this one:
Sibelius - Canzonetta op. 62a
Perhaps it is an arrangement - I don't know. It is available on this cd: "Finlandia Souvenir Selection
Finlandia 8- Festival Of Cello Clas (Album)". Only tracks for cello and piano! So if you're in to scandinavian music - try this one! (buy it from cdon.com)

The Beethoven cello sonatas are fine too. And Brahms' too.
The Rachmaninov cello sonata are very good - but very difficult - the piano part especially.

Debussy and Mendelsohn have written cello sonatas too - but I'm not that familliar with them.

There are a lot of modern composers, who have written for cello and piano too, if you are looking for that kind of stuff?

It may be a bit late for this thread, but I am personally very fond of the sonatas by Bach /BWV1027, 1028, 1029). They are actually written for viola da gamba and harpsichord, but I have a CD where it is on cello and piano (Maisky/Argerich on Deutsche Grammophon). I find it much more relaxed when it is on piano... much rounder sound.
